Need help on "erasing" laptop personal data

Hi,

I'm trying to sell a laptop that was given to me as a gift, I've only used it once (just to sign on and check it out) but I have a laptop from work and don't need the other. I've posted it on ebay (I see I can post it on this website also, I just registered) but my question is, how do I "erase" information so anyone who gets it is pretty much getting a new computer? I mean, like when I signed on I used my name as the computer name, and I probably went on the web a couple times (ebay, to try and sell it) and I just don't trust people that have offered me almost 3 grand for it to ship it overseas (I will not do that, that seems fishy).

Any help would be appreciated.

My boyfriend said to "fdisk" it. Isn't that placing a partition on the hard drive? That's not reformatting, is it? (I should really re-read my old DOS books).

Thanks again.

I'm pretty sure a zero-write or Low Level Format would be the best way to get rid of everything. Most other methods(basic format, partition/fdisk) can be undone...
