need help on HDD upgrade

here's my problem... i'm running out of space (seagate 40 GB IDE) so I need to upgrade my computer's HDD. my motherboard is Intel D845PESV. now here are my questions:

1. if I replace my current HDD with a new one will I lose my data? if I will lose my data then how to avoid losing it?
2. is it possible to add another HDD instead of replacing it so I can have two HDD? will is there any danger to data loss or OS disruption by adding another HDD?

sorry for my novice questions. my knowledge in computer is superbly limited, I searched on the net but I can not find user-level details regarding this, especially for Q#2. please advice me on this (detail me the process if you don't mind). your help is greatly appreciated.

1) Yes and no. The data is on your old drive. Most manufacturers offer some kind of cloning software. You could probably find some freeware program to copy everything from the old drive onto the new one and everything would remain intact.

2) Yes. I'd say go with the above option though. If everything is done correctly, you'll have two copies of your data. If for whatever reason the new drive dies, you have your old drive to fall back to.
 
is this cloning software able to copy everything including OS and softwares or is it just for files (mp3, docs etc.)? what software do you recommend to do the cloning (the freeware ones)?

Cloning software does just that. It clones bit per bit. And as I mentioned before, most manufactures offer such software. If you get say a Western Digital disk, just locate their software.
