Need help on how to optimize my computer!

Hey i want to know if there's a way i can optimize my computer because it's currently sucking hardcore, and if you could suggest me what operating system to install because i plan on formatting it, well here are my specs.

Is there something i should upgrade is there something bad there :S or should i just buy a new computer?

Without knowing the exact specs of the computer, I'd say it's time to just build a new one. Pentium 4's are 3 generations old at this point.

edit: The only Pentium 4's with that clock speed are the old Socket 478 type. It's probably time for a new system.

You could, probably, but compared to modern systems it'd still be pretty slow. However, if it's running slower than when you got it, then the problem is probably with your software, not the computer itself. What antivirus are you running? Norton and McAffee can both be major resource hogs.

Personally, I use the following programs to keep my computer running fast:

CCleaner: (Run this once a month or so.)
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Malwarebytes: (Free version is fine. Again, at least once a month.)
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

IOBit Smart Defrag: (set this to start when Windows starts, and enable auto defrag)
http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html

Simply backing up your files and reinstalling windows can also do wonders.

yeah that's what is tarted doing some time ago, and that's the problem it's slower than when i bought it, i'm currently using AVG and Advanced System SelfCare which defrags and repairs registry.

Would the best option be windows xp?

I have a 70gb primary c Drive and no externals so i'm looking for the simplest windows version that doesnt use much memory or disk space :S
 
A Pentium 4 is a pretty slow processor presently. If you backup all your data and do a reinstallation of Windows and it doesn't seem to fix things you may want to consider buying a new desktop computer.

It really also depends on what you are using this computer for. You have enough RAM so a memory upgrade would not be a good option in my opinion.
 
you can keep using that one, windows 7 will run a bit better, ubuntu will run alot better than your current windows xp.

if you're not having major problems at this point you're probably using it for internet and email mostly - a very economical system (check links below if you'd like) would do you just fine.

Keep using it if your programs are still running, there's not really any room for upgrade there - you're socket is obsolite and your memory is slow and maxed out (no offense :))... it's not really worth sinking money into that at this point - i sell machines similar to that setup for $100-140 refurbished!

Look for a machine that's not pressing on your price range goals, but has atleast an AM2/AM2+ board (or any Core2 chip), atleast a couple gig's of ddr2/3, decent video capabilites and enough harddrive space so you wont have to worry about it in a year.
 
Yeah i've tight on budget haha i'm probablly gonna buy a cheap computer with a dual core processer, with no os on it and the cheapest graphic card how much would that cost me? no hard drives and i'll just put my ddr2 ram that i currently have on it, so how much cash am i looking at :S?

The Celeron E3300 Dual-Core Processor is much better than your old Pentium 4. I would get a different motherboard though.

Look at the GIGABYTE GA-G41M-ES2L motherboard.

In the future when the price drops you could upgrade the processor on the GIGABYTE GA-G41M-ES2L motherboard to a Core 2 Quad or a Core 2 Quad Extreme Processor.
 
hmm it's not available in my computer store just checked, i dont know if this hasanything to do but im looking at parts for a 775 socket i'm not sure what that is anyways lol :S
