Need help picking an AMD CPU

I have a Dell Optiplex 780 that I'd like to upgrade a bit. Problem is, I can't find any compatibility lists for the model. I want to put a more powerful AMD processor in, but it currently only has an Intel, and Im not sure it will be compatible. Anyone else have some ideas?

You will not be able to put an AMD processor into an Intel motherboard. You will need to build a new system.

I assume it is a 775 socket system, so you must get an intel 775 socket processor.

Alternatively build a new system for scratch, it depends how much you want to spend.

If you want a AMD cpu, then you will need an AMD Motherboard First...But you are talking about building a new computer..

Sounds like the best CPU you can put in it is a Core 2 Quad, but we need to know the socket first. Download and open CPU-Z, and look what socket it says. It will look something like "LGA 775".

It's a Core 2 Duo as of now, so that means Im stuck with Intel?
Otherwise the only option is replacing the motherboard with it, as far as Im understanding.

Do the CPU-Z thing, and also Intel is a great CPU brand. Also in CPU-Z tell us your complete CPU model (like Core 2 Duo E8400).

I think most people would take intel over amd.

Amd is mostly used by people on a tight budget, their newer processors are much better but at the age of your system, intel 775 vs amd am2+, intel is vastly superior.

If you want to upgrade with little spend buy a used intel core 2 quad, but if you can afford to go for a new system so you can get the benefit of new technologies like usb 3.0, sata III, ddr3 memory etc.

wrong, am2+ is only a hint slower then comparable intel core 2 quads, an am2+ board can also run an am3 cpu and cpus like the phenom II 965 are still pretty okey cpus.

An FX6300 is also very good price-performance, I prefer this one over an i3...
