so im thinking of changing my gpu. i have a gtx260 core 216. i want something that has dx 11 of course, but dont know what is equal to my current card and what is better than it. i have a 25 in 1080p hp monitor using hdmi, and play most modern games like metro 2033 and dirt 2 ect ect. right now i can play them all on high settings except for maybe 2 games, but i know that wont last much longer with future games. i would like a card that is at least 25% or more, better than my current card. price range is between $200-$300. i dont think i want to sli or crossfire as my board only has 1 slot, but i may change boards later that will support sli. i prefer nvidia over ati just because of an experience i had with an ati 4890 (seemed that my 260 ran games smoother which is why i kept it and sold the 4890.) my psu is good (check sig for machine specs). any thought would be great.

a gtx460 is a good card for dx11 in the $200 range and is about 25%~40% faster than the older gtx260

and gtx470 for the $300 which is roughly 70% faster than the gtx260

do you mean its 25-40% faster than the first gtx260, or the core 216? im confused when you say "the older 260". but yeah i was kind of thinking of the 460, 470, how long will it last you think before i would need to consider upgrading again? i want it to last awhile before i upgrade again. and out of curiosity, where does the 5850 rate in regaurdes to the 260, 460 and 470? and finaly, would it be smarter to get a 460 now, and later upgrade my board to a sli one and get another 460, or just get one good card now like the 470, and just upgrade to a better card than that in the future, sticking with a single card solution? thanks again for all the help

depending on the game, on average i would say the 5850 is behind the gtx 470 anywhere from 5-10 fps.

keep in mind the 5850 is anywhere from $20-40 cheaper and will consume less power.

i would definitely say go with the gtx460. but, if you really plan on doing multiple-gpus down the road, you won't be able to do sli because of your motherboard. but, if you plan on changing motherboards or don't care about sli, the 460 is definitely the way to go. otherwise, i personally would either wait and see what the amd 6000 series has in store or go for the 5850.

EDIT: looks like you only have 1 pci-e slot. i would definitely go with the 460. it will perform just under the 5850, probably around 10 fps less on average, maybe less.

i meant the 216core gtx260.

if you were to get a GTX400 series, you would be upgrading again pretty soon. nvidia's GTX400 series is flawed to the core, which is always why the announced that the fermi project was nothing but a "tease" for until the GTX500 series is out. tbh, that was just a lame cover up story for the fail this time.

the 5850 would generally sit firmly between the GTX460 and GTX470

it goes GTX470 > HD5850 > GTX460 > GTX465 > GTX260

yes, the GTX465 is the absolute worst fermi product out. simply because it is (literally) nothing but a crippled GTX470 that did not meet certain criteria, and decided to brand it the GTX465. ever wondered why the GTX465 is the ONLY card that does not have a reference model? well, that's the reason lol

i'd go with the gtx460, and sli later down the line. nobody would want to sli a gtx470... a single gtx470 runs hot enough as it is, the GF100 chips are flawed pretty bad.

so you say that the gtx 4 series are pretty flawed, as well that if i were to get a 4 series i would want to upgrade again fairly soon? if this is correct then maybe i should wait and see what is up with the gtx5 series? this 260 will get me by till then? when are the 5 series from nvidia due to be released? and if i dont wait, then ill probably get a new board for sli and am3 (any recomendations here would be great), and get 2 x 460 1 gig versions all at once and sell my current board and 260. but ill probably just wait a while.

te early 4 series were "bad." but the 460 is based on a completely different chip (104 if i remember correctly) which makes the gtx 460 and EXCELLENT card compared to any of the other 4xx cards.

if you go with an amd board, you'll have to get an nvidia chipset. no usb 3.0 and/or sata 3.0.

if you want usb 3.0 and/or sata 3.0 but still want a multi-gpu configuration, start with a single 5850 (or 5870).
