Its getting close to christmas so ive asked for a computer. I have a budget of £800 ($1,400). The computer will be for gaming mainly

Ive started looking for the parts and this is what i have so far:

GIGABYTE GA-K8N Pro-SLI ATX AMD Motherboard ($115)
AMD ATHLON 64 X2 3800+ DUAL-CORE 939-PIN PROCESSOR @ 2.0GHz 2x512KB L2 CACHE ($350)
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L200S0 200GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150 ($86)
XServe G5 2GB (2X1GB) PC3200 DDR400 RAM ($187)
eVGA 6800 GT 256MB DDR3/PCI-E/TV-Out/Dual-DV ($289)
POLYVIEW 19IN LCD V-293 SILVER/BLK W/DVI SPG ($269)

So far thats totaling at $1,296 and i still need more things to buy.

I need help to be honest, im not sure what power supply i need and a decent case to get(id like 1 that doesnt let off alot of noise) and they might be more things i need to buy as well im just not sure, seen as this is my first time doing this :P

Could you guys help me find the parts i need for a good gaming machine within my budget. Exlcuding mouse and keyboard. Id like the mother board to be SLI ready for future upgrading.

If it helps my budget i could just buy a 1gig stick of ram and then maybe buy more somtime in the new year.

thanks for your helps

EDIT: Ive decided it doesnt matter about the monitor either so £800 ($1,400) on just the system, although it would be nice to have a little left over for taking it to a shop to get put together. Id like to put it together myself but im afraid il screw it up because i dont know anything about BIOS setup, etc.

thanks again

Don't forget a cdrom. I recommend the one in my sig its a cd/dvd burner, it only cost $50.

PSU 101

Antec Sonata cases :)

why? considering a single next generation videocard will outpace a current generation sli configuration...

But wouldnt it be wise to have an sli motherboard so i wont have to buy a new motherboard in a year or so?

Or are sli motherboards only better when your actualy using 2 graphic cards?

My system cost me about $2185 (I'm trying to sell it). I would go with SLI board if i were you.

I was thinking it would be best to go with SLI because it will be better in the long run.

i say use a sesonic psu and get a msi 7800 gt at only £260
Seasonic makes a lot of PSUs, narrow it down a bit?

1. Well for starters, if you want to save on the cost of the mobo, buy an EVGA 7800class card and u geta SLI board for free
2. Well in a year if you think you're gonna be obsolete enough to warrant a new videocard .. then odds are the motherboard will also be obsolete too... :)

I say go with a 6800gt it will be cheaper and is pretty much the same a a 7800gt.
Pricewise you are absolutely correct, performance wise you'd be horribly incorrect. :) Consider the following as a quick counter

Id love to get the 7800gt but realisticaly il go for the 6800gt. That should be more then good enough for the games i play/will play and il go for a mobo with SLI because its unlikly that i would buy 2 gfx cards. To get things started could you suggest a good motherboard for me Praetor?

My bad, I stand corrected. I remember looking a the specs and them being pretty much the same. Thank you for correcting me Praetor.

Thats quite a difference. Do you think my budget could stretch to buying one of those?

ive just had a quick look and 2 geforce 7800 gt 256mb cards for about £400 ($710). Thats half my budget, do you guys think i would be able to get all the other parts for £400 ($710). Thats a motherboard, 1gig of RAM, a harddrive (about 120gig), case, power supply, a cpu with fans, cd drive, sound card.

thats sounds like quite a lot to buy for £400 :|
would it be possibly or will i have to forget about going SLI?
