Hello
My printer is a HP 2600N

The desktop is a XP 32-bit system and I have a laptop that I would like to print from. The laptop is Vista and I think it is 64 bit vista because the processor supports 64 bit (laptop model number F558us Presario).

How do I print from the laptop? I can use USB or Ethernet cable, I don't mind... Just don't know how to set either one up.

We need mor info
do you have a router , hub or switch ?
wireless or wired sollution
is the printer connected to the desktop ? by what type of port / cable

..basically you are going to need to create a work group
the PC , notebook and printer will need to be in the network
either wired or wireless
the most simple would be connecting the printer to the desktop via lpt or usb.
connecting the desktop to the notebook with a crossover cable, create a workgroup, create shares , share the printer, capture the printer on the notebook. ... now adays a lot of ppl have broad band and a router , so it would be slightly different scenario.

its a router (linksys wrt54g)

wireless connection from the laptop but wired connection from the desktop (ethernet cable)

printer can be connected via USB cable to desktop or router via ethernet

So the printer has a cat5 port .. color laser, nice :) the company I used to work for we did a roll out of about 200 of those at the dept of justice.
Umm I think you have to go into the control panel to configure the ip. They may be set to default to obtain an ip address. I remeber as we installed each printer we printed a config page that had the ip address of the printer, subnet, gateway etc...anyway here is the hp page for all the manuals for your printer

basically you have to create a network and depends on if you have home or professional xp. I don't recommend the xp automatic network set up, though some do. here is a link to the peer to peer wizard

I hope you don't mind if I stop you right there, I think you might be getting ready to send him through a few unnecessary steps.

I've networked HP printers before, and they generally have a very easy solution for printer sharing over a network. First, all you need to do hook-up wise is to run a Cat5 (ethernet cable) from your router to your printer. Then insert the installation CD that came with the printer into the desktop. If I remember correctly, first it will initialize the setup which take a minute or two, and then the first or second window of options in the setup process allows you to choose whether the printer being installed is directly connected to the computer or if it is connected across a network. Choose across a network, of course, and then the setup program will detect it and do the rest of the work for you. Then repeat on the laptop.

... that is why I gave him a link to ALL the manuals for his printer
Just to make sure I did not make an error / best way

I can't know everything :)

Hello
My printer is a HP 2600N
How do I print from the laptop?

1 :so your home pc's are networked ?
connect the printer on your desktop using usb.
Install the driver,when done,
Go to control panel-->printer and faxes, locate the printer,right-click and "share" (if thats the case)
After the sharing, go on the laptop, and go to start-->Run..then type "\\IP of the desktop" then press enter, you'll see the shared resources of the desktop.

2: if this printer is standalone (meaning it's connected to the network,no pc's attached) you will have to run the setup on the printer.use the manual for that.

if i understand you well this printer is connected to the desktop right ?
if so step 1 shud work

oh i forgot, in vista there's no "run" from start menu, you have to type "run" in the search box of vista start menu

Or Windows Key + R, but I still maintain that it would be easier and better to let HP's setup program do the configuring for you. In fact, because you have to install the drivers anyway, I think enabling printer sharing and any other steps are a waste of time as the setup does it for you anyway.

yeah you're probably right if the OP says he doesn't know anything about the setup..And also if the printer was standalone like i said i would recommend he do it otherwise he'd be playing with the printer system..
but once you've learn it, it's easy, i do those everyday..lol

Alright I'm having a bit of trouble. The 2 Vista laptops can see each other fine in the Network menu, but they can't see the XP laptop and XP desktop. The XP laptop and desktop can see each other but not the vista laptops.. I have ensured that the workgroup names are the same. What is the problem?

if you are referring to printing, it's not a problem if vista can't see xp because you can still make the connection if you're referring to share folders and stuff i dunno, try doing a "search for computers" in vista !!
