NEED HELP! Swapping HD's

I currently have a 40gb hard drive on my computer and just bought a 250GB hard drive. I want to somehow replace the old hard drive with the new one, without losing any data. Is this possible?

If i made an exact copy of the old HD using Norton Ghost and then put the new HD as the master, would everything run correctly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!
 
are you out of expansion slots? i recently just filled a 200 gb drive and added a 250 gb, transfered all music and videos to the slave drive (new one) and kept the operating system on the old one as the master. why not keep the 40gb drive as your master with your os and other program files while moving all other files to your second drive.
