Year I was worried because of people saying when you pull the heatsink off it can pull the cpu out also but if ur carefull its should be okay :) (I had no problems)

no way you will pull out the cpu also. they probally mean NB or mosfet's. those are the only things i've heard of coming off the board from too much force. just take your time and you will be fine.

All new Intel CPUs are LGA... that is without pins, and the socket locks over the CPU. On AMD CPUs and older Intels, there are pins, and the socket locks simply by tightening on the pins. On those, it is definitely possible for the CPU to pop out when you remove the heatsink if the thermal compound has formed a sufficient bond between the two, but this won't damage the CPU so long as you do not bend any pins.

But the CPU in question is LGA, so this is not an issue.

understood, no pins. Is there proper procedure to remove socket n775 cpu?

Thanks

well your hp motherboard probably does not support that cpu, I guess the only way out is to buy a new motherboard? Or maybe a bios update will help.

I've encountered a similar problem. Is this an HP slimline? The motherboards they use are custom and only work with the heat sink that is included. You could either just use the old heat sink, or do what I did... secure the new one with cable ties.
