I switched from nvidia fx5200 128mb to fx5500 256mb. Since then I encounter problems on my display. My desktop disappears after I exit a game. It only displays horizontal lines but the pc doesn't hang. The display is okay on other application though. I tried to install the latest driver for the card already. Is my video card damaged?

I suspect problems with the GPU. Try the 5200 again and see if you have similar problems. Maybe try the 5500 in another PC if possible.

Possibly, the latest/best driver for that card probably would be a driver from approximately 2 years ago, I would recommend looking for something around version 82.91. That's what I used on my GeForce 6600, and it doesn't have any SLI crap or anything, you could either use that or an earlier version. If that doesn't work, go to an even earlier version, you may need to a little bit of trial and error. You should be able to find what you need here, they have a pretty extensive list of nVidia drivers...

I think the old drivers should archived somewhere, just google Nvidia drive 8 or something and it should come up. The problem is that the 5 series is so old, so its really hard to make a driver that is both compatible with ancient hardware as well as the newest one.
