Ok, here is my delima. I have an old Gateway computer with Win XP installed on it. When i boot the computer up it runs through everything as normal. right after the "windows XP" boot screen comes up the light on the moniter turns red (from green) and nothing shows up anymore. it seems like the rest of the computer is still doing its normal thing. but nothing shows up on the monitor. i would think it to be the monitor but, it shows everything normal until the boot screen.

Bad video card drivers? Try booting in safe mode. If that doesn't work, a repair via the Windows CD should fix it if you're having corruption problems.

It's likely that you've set the resolution or refresh rate too high. Boot into safe mode, set them to something normal, and then reboot.

Press F8 before windows loads (actually, just keep pressing it regularly if you don't know when), and choose Safe Mode from the menu.

Here's an easier way, sorry if i'm confusing you. Instead of selecting safe mode, choose 'VGA mode'. Does it boot correctly (it will be in 640 x 480)?

Right click on the desktop, go to properties -> Settings. Increase the resolution to 800x600 and click apply. Once done, you can increase it again to 1024x768 if you prefer. Go to Advanced -> Monitor, and set the refresh rate to around 75Hz. If your system continues to work, you're back to normal

Assuming, of course, the monitor actually supports 800x600, it sounds like you may have a driver problem. Download a driver for your video card, boot up in VGA mode, and install it.

What are your system specs? Can you explain the history of the problem? Has it come around recently? If so, did you make any changes before it did?

have you installed a new video card recently?

i've had a similar problem before... i had just installed a new video card, and i hadn't switched displays. right-click on the desktop and go to settings... change your display to the new gpu. if a new video card isn't the case... i dont know what to tell you. maybe re-install your video drivers?

and so the problem persists, i got it to run normally but as soon as i set the resolution, the screen goes blank. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?
