Need help, will this work?

Hey guys,

Yesterday my mum tried to yank the monitor cable out of the back of my computer without loosening the knobs first -_- needless to say she completely buggered to connector up.

If I buy a new video card (I was previously just using the integrated graphics) will it work right off the mark without installing drivers? Will I be able to just attach it and connect the monitor? Because there is no way I'll be able to fix the connector thing for the integrated graphics :(

Did just the screw-sockets come out or the whole port??

You will have to install drivers that will work with your new card. It will not work with your integrated drivers. As long as the monitor cable is fine (pins not bent or missing) you should be able to connect it to the new card just fine.

Windows usually has their version of the drivers on the install CD. Do you have any video at all? Can you get in to your BIOS to enable off-board video? Cross your fingers!;)

Yeah the monitor cable is just fine, she almost literally ripped the port off of the motherboard though. Like I removed the cover for the port and a couple of the pins had snapped off and a lot of the others were bent rather badly.

Damian, no video at all mate :( I can't plug my monitor into my video socket, it's just busted.

Oi!! Yeah...grab a new video card. If it turns out that your cable is damaged, just grab another. VGA cables are a dime a dozen.

What type of slot do you have on your motherboard? PCIe or AGP?

OK. You can still get a very inexpensive AGP card. Did you need something with any horsepower? If you aren't looking to gain any performance over the IGP that you were using, you can get a simple AGP card for under $30. :)

Thanks Zath :) I don't particularly need a powerful one but I'll pick up a half decent one off eBay, I was watching a 256mb ATi Radeon 9600 Pro before my computer got buggered :P

My pleasure Victor. Don't pay too much for that 9600Pro now. ;)

Have a look over here for some comparisons.

Edit: Just curious... What was your mom trying to accomplish? :)
