Need Help with a computer ASAP

Alright, I'm not exactly new to computers, My girlfriends computer is on the fritz and it's got me confused... she told me that a storm came through and hit the line the computer was on and fried the surge protector they had, well of course, it shut the computer off. They told me that it wouldn't turn on at all, I figured more than likely it fried the power supply. Got it back to my house to work on it and when I hit the power button, the thing will turn on, but won't actually try to boot windows... it won't even throw anything up on the monitor... all it will do is beep, every 2 or 3 seconds or so. I figured that maybe hard booting the computer through the windows disk might work but it didn't. So, I started taking out parts and putting them into a different motherboard and then realized that the motherboard I was switching everything to used a completely different cpu. so I put everything back in and even tried hooking up a different hard drive that I had lying around and it still wouldn't do anything but beep. So I'm at wits end with it really... any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Lightening strikes alright! It sounds like the board may be toast along with the power strip the system was plugged into. The constant beeping generally points at the cpu or memory installed if not simply the supply now being "well done" in!

The surge went into that far enough where you may simply having to build or buy another case to start over. I wouldn't count on saving too much out of the current one while you could swap out the same socket type board in a gamble that the cpu is still good. You just don't know what is still good as well as what will hold up when used elsewhere.

Yeah, sounds like a component is toast. It's most likely the motherboard. The only way to find out for sure is to replace it and see if it works.

Well...

:D I figured out what it was, and how lightning fried a RAM stick  I'll never know, the computer is back on track but now I'm having problems getting it to connect to a broadband connection. I've re-installed windows and repartitioned the drive, formatted everything and got it back to the basics, I appreciate the quick response guys... :) any suggestions on how to get it to connect? I tried to go into the router settings through the command prompt using the telnet command... but for some reason it says Attempting connection to host.....host connection failed. port 23 connection failed. Any Ideas? (the telnet command directs the cmd prompt to "microsoft telnet" did the boot disk for windows somehow set this computer up for a "network only" computer? As in it needs a master computer in the network for all drivers and programs?)

It's likely the surge that took out one dimm may have also hit the router or any modem or nik card in use at the time. You have to remember a large power surge went right into everything plugged into the power strip that cooked on you. If the router was also plugged in there...? doa as well?

As far as network settings that is done by you after Windows is installed when enabling file and printer sharing, remote protocols, etc. when going to set up any internet, ethernet, Lan, etc.. If the system there is connected directly inline with the router that would be the host pc. Is that cable, dsl, or WiFi in use there?
