Need Help with Asus P4P800SE Motherboard

Hello People

I just purchased this motherboard from newegg.com. It says " IDE: 2x ATA 100 up to 4 Devices " and "Onboard SATA/RAID 2x Serial ATA by ICH5R, RAID 0/1 " does that mean that I can have 4 IDE device and additional 2 SATA devices? Can this motherboard hold up to 6 drives or it just hold 4 with 2 option for SATA. Please email me back about this because I am wondering if it can. Thank you.

Thank you for your quick reply to my thread. I didn't think anyone would answer it so fast. As you see the on the motherboard there is 2 plugs for IDE cable and 2 small plugs for SATA. You know on the regular hard drives it has a IDE cable and power plug so how does SATA work if this motherboard can hold up to 6 drives.

Your board has a pair if PATA connectors (highlighted in red), and a pair of SATA connectors (green). The PATA connectors can support two devices each, the SATA, only one.

As for power, most drives will accept power from your standard 4 pin molex (white), including most SATA drives as well. Some SATA drives only accept the special SATA power connector (black) but there are convertors available.

You said that the PATA connectors can support 2 devices each and I understand that part. Currently I already have 2 Hard drives and 2 CD-Rom using the PATA connector. I want to get a Western Digital 200GB Serial ATA and add it in there so I would have 3 Hard drives instead of 2. If both PATA connectors are already in use I don't get how does SATA works. You show me the converter above but that converter is only for power so what plug you use to connect to the motherboard. For example The 2 PATA connectors you can use 2 IDE cables but for the SATA where does the cable come from? That is the part I am lost about and confused.

If you buy a SATA drive... naturally it has nothing to do with PATA connectors .. you plug the SATA drive into the SATA connectors. Like i said:

alright thanks alot for your help. I just bought the motherboard and until i found out which one was SATA i was just confused. Thanks again for your quick response and answering all my question i needed.
