Need Help with Burnt out/Smoke smelling computer

I recently added in some ram (128mb) to my computer and when I turned it back on I started smell a smoke smelling/burning out smell, so I unplugged the computer immediatly and removed it from the room it was in. What should I do to remove the smell and will the hard drive in it still work if I put it in another computer?
 
I opened the windows in my room to air it out, and how long should I let it cool down before I remove the HDD? Since it most likely is to do with the ram I put in. I must of forgotten to hook on one of the plugs that lock in the ram stick
