Need Help With Dell Desktop Sound Volume

On a year old dell 64 bit desktop pc running winxp pro sp3, the sound has become barely audible through the speakers whether it be the xp startup and shutdown tune, a song attachment in an email, or youtube.

I have checked all the settings I can think of. The slider under the speaker icon in the system tray is half way up. All the master control sliders are up and nothing is muted. In CONTROL PANEL under Sounds & Audio Devices the settings don't appear to be in error.

The speaker control box has a volume control knob and an on/off button. With the button off there is no sound...with it on, the sound is again barely audible. I would appreciate your help on this situation.

Thanks!

Could have blown your speakers or your sound card is dying. Try a different source of audio( an HDTV, sound system, headphones) and see if you have the same issue. If not it's probably your speakers. There's a chance it be your audio cable as well. If all audio sources sound the same it's either your sound card or audio cable

Is the audio cable the lines plugged into the speaker control box and are factory attached to the speakers? Also do you mean to plug a headset into the jack on front of computer to check the volume?
