Need Help With Drive Configuration After HD Install

Original hardware config for Dell GX270 was 160GB WD Hard Drive, CD Writer, 3.5 Diskette Drive.

Had the problem with the userinit.exe missing. So I:
1) Removed the 3.5 inch floppy
2) Bought new IDE cable with 2 plug ins.
3) Made the new hard drive the master
4) Made the old hard drive the slave

System starts up but I don't understand the hardware configuration in setup. This is what it shows:
Diskette Drive A: Not installed
SATA Prim: Off (capacity NA)
Primary Master: Unknown Device Drive Type: Auto
Primary Slave: Off Drive Type: Off
Secondary Master: CD-Rom Drive Drive Type: Auto
Secondary Slave: Off Drive Type: Off

IDE Drive UDMA: Can be On or Off

Do I have things connected wrong? I want to re-install windows XP on the new drive and removed XP from the old drive and access documents and files. I assume they should both be showing up as Primary Master and Primary Slave??

Sorry. I searched for answers but couldn't find any. Thanks for any help you can give me.

If I were to just replace the original hard drive with a new one (only one hard drive) where should it show up on the drive configuration?

With an IDE connector - it should recognize the drive without doing anything else?

I did look on the Western Digital website and set the jumper things the way they said. Master with slave present and the other to slave.

I assume the master should be showing up under Primary Master (where it says Unknown now?)

What does Drive Type mean?

Sorry I just don't know anything about all of this.

Drive type should be set to auto detect. You need to figure out what the problem is before buying a new drive. I usually set IDE drives to cable select and put the hard drive on the very end connector on the cable.
