Need help with my own interesting project!

So, I thought maybe some of you would have more experience with this type of thing than me...

I have some car audio stuff siting around my room (2 speakers, 1 sub, 2 amps...) and I thought I would try to mount the speakers and sub into a wooden case - as to make it all portable. In this way I wanted to add connections to the case for my TV and Laptop.

All three components have a combined wattage of 480. So I figure a 500w PC power supply would be sufficient to operate this setup.

Anyway, this project is just in the planning stage and I was hoping for some feedback/comments or possible ideas!

Thanks!

A PSU may be 500 watts but that 500 watts is distributed among 3 different voltage levels, 3.3V 5V and 12V.

the audio stuff runs off 12v i think

also a PC psu is only like 60% efficient, and like gamerman says, thats spread across the voltages. The actual current on the 12v is low.

Just run all your stuff off a car battery?

I've seen similar projects done using a computer power supply... just not mounted in any kind of case...
A car battery would be too huge I think, and not something I'd particularly want to keep in my room haha.

What about if I used a larger power supply? Say... 750 or 1000?

Well you can calculate how much wattage you need.
Determine the amperage your speakers need and multiply it by 12 (for 12 Volts).
Amp x Volts = Watts

A decent 500 watt PSU should have around 25-30 Amperes running through the 12V line.
