What do you experts think of this build: I have about $1300 to spend on all listed plus I need advice on a video card. Thanks for your input!

Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Intel BOXD975XBX2KR LGA 775 Intel 975X ATX Intel Motherboard
OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI ATX12V 600W Power Supply
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor
2 CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (4GB Total)
2 Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
LG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black E-IDE/ATAPI
Thermaltake CL-P0401 110mm Full-Range Fan CPU Cooler

Total so far = 1217.00

I'll be using the setup for amateur video/photo work, basic multimedia stuff.

Can somebody provide some feedback on this? I'd like to order parts in the next day or so. thanks for any help:)

$1300? Right now? Wait a few days/weeks and you'll see a big price drop as long as new processors that are cheaper AND better :)

Do you have a 64 bit operating system? If not, you'll need to get one if you plan on installing 4 GB of RAM.

What would a better processor be for multitasking/multimedia etc? The price point of Q6600 is far below the next quad processor - per pricewatch. Is intel having a known price drop in the next few days/weeks or just speculated to be sometime in the near future? I will most likely run 32 bit for now, good catch I'll just get the 2GB RAM.

i have had trouble with that motherboard, just a warning. you should check out the MSI neo2 p35 for that build

The Q6600 would be your best bet - if you need something right now. I don't believe there is a known date for a price drop, but I would expect the price of the Q6600 to drop in February - March. By then, supply of the 65nm group will be high due to the demand for the 45nm CPUs.

On neweggs site, the MSI neo2 does not support quad core processor - or so it says anyway.

I still need recommendations for a solid video card for my purposes (very little, if any gaming), primarily photo/video/multimedia stuff etc.

Am I missing something?

CPU Socket Type LGA 775
CPU Type Core 2 Extreme / Core 2 Duo / Pentium EE / Pentium
FSB 1333/1066MHz
Supported CPU Technologies Hyper-Threading Technology

well, core 2 extreme is quad core, and there is a core 2 quad model. this motherboard supports both, trust me

Thanks for the clarification, some had specifically said quad core which is why I was confused - I'll have a look at it. Any thoughts on a video card?

i'm not a gamer at all, perhaps once in a great while, i need a solid video card for photo/video/multimedia etc.

well, you dont really need anything all that great for photo/video/multimedia. i think the 8600GTS would suit you well, even if you use photoshop its still a decent card. if you are really into photo/vid editing, and you need a workstation type graphics card so you can edit huge files, check out the nvidia quadro series. they can be pricey though

Will I be able to run Vista with this setup and the 8600 GTS? Also, can I get the machine running with the RAM I've selected or would a BIOS flash be necessary (I've read in some places you need a more generic RAM just to get up and running so you can flash the BIOS and install better RAM)...

Yes, in fact, the 8600's perform better in Vista...

No, any RAM is the same. From pqi RAM to G Skills... No BIOS flash is needed.

infact why not wait 100 years? by then this kind of processor would cost only 1 penny.

Its a paradox, buy it when you want to, not when its cheaper because there will always be something better.

and post your sarcasm somewhere else?

After X-Mas, Intel is releasing their new 45nm processors. There will be $200-$1100 processors. Grab a $200 one, and run it. It has more cache and the speed is alot faster. Better architecture...
