Need Help with Running Minecraft

I have a fairly new (purchased in Feb) HP Pavilion DV7 with the following specs:
-Intel Core i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz (2 cores, 4 Logical Processors)
-8gb's of DDR3 RAM
-Intel Graphics HD 3000 Integrated Graphics Card
-Windows 7 64bit OS

I have been watching Minecraft videos for some time now on Youtube, but never played it until yesterday. I downloaded the demo version and needless to say, I am now addicted to it. The only problem is that I can't play the game without noticeable lag unless I have the render distance set to short or tiny and the graphics set to fast. I assume this is because of my integrated Intel Graphics card. I contacted HP to see if I could replace the card, but didn't realize the graphics card was soldered to the motherboard and could not be replaced and there is no way to add another better graphics card from say NVIDIA. I was just wondering if there truly is no way to replace or add another graphics card and/or if I'm just doing something wrong settings wise with Minecraft.

I love Minecraft and I suppose I could live with just buying it and playing it with the crappy render distance, but I would prefer to at least be able to play on normal considering the rest of my notebook is more than capable of playing on the best settings.

Thanks for the help!

Your notebook is NOT capable of running it on the highest settings. Maybe if you thought about playing games when you bought your Lappy, you would have got a better one for the same price. Intel HD 3000 sucks for playing any game including minecraft. I have a dell with very simaler specs, can run minecraft barley on the lowest settings.

Wow! I had no idea Minecraft was that big of a deal to run! I guess I shouldn't have let the simple block theme influence my thoughts on it.

Yes, I should have probably just built my own desktop or at least bought a desktop in the first place if I was interested in playing games....funny thing is I didn't have any interest in games at the time, but look where I am now. I'm guessing there truly isn't anyway to add a better graphics card then considering there apparently aren't any ports to add one like on a desktop. Bummer.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of hardware WOULD I need to run Minecraft on the best settings?

Oh, and thanks for the quick reply!

Not very much. $500 to build a fine pc, for lots of games on med or hi settings, minecraft on max. You can even get some Lappys for $500 that will play minecraft on med. like, smooth lighting off, detail hi. Oh, did you make sure you have 64 bit java, have The setting that doesn't say fancy (forgot what its called) and smooth lighting off? Usually, render disTance doesn't decrease fps unless you have 32 bit java. No way to replace a gpu on a laptop with intel hd.

Interesting. At that price I would definitely consider buying or more likely building a gaming desktop if I could play a game like BF3 on it.

I think I actually may have had the 32bit version of Java installed! When I downloaded the demo it automatically redirected me to a page and told me I needed to download Java. I didn't even look twice at what exactly it was, but after installing the official 64 bit version and turning off smooth lighting, the game seems much less laggy playing on the normal render distance with the graphics set to fast. Thanks for those two tips!

Too bad about the graphics card, I guess I'll keep that in mind next time! ;)

at 500 you will be able to play BF3, but not well. For reference, medium @ 1366*768 resolution with a HD 4870 and Celeron G530 netted upper 20s FPS. plenty playable.

Hmm. I may consider building one in the future after I rake up some cash. I just bought myself a Galaxy S3, so cash certainly isn't just overflowing from my pockets at the moment. :D

On a side note. I found Call of Duty 2 in one of my drawers that I never got around to installing on the old computer I bought it for. Do you think my computer can run it with its current setup?

I know the feeling. I have ~850 every month after rent and utilities, so computer parts are a few at a time.

What I would consider is saving up till you have ~800 to play with, that way you could be very close to maxing the game.

you may. Not really sure. I could run MW3 on low with integrated on a G530 at 20ish frames. Can max it with a 7900m GTX. Not sure how a HD3000 would fit in there.

Gave it a try. After figuring out that you have to manually select the setup.exe in the file and run it as an admin, I type the key code in and try to install it, but keep getting this error:

Error 1309. Error reading from file F:\Setup\Data\pb\pbsv.dll. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

Not sure what the issue is... Any ideas?

not a clue, but you might try customer support. number should be in the back of the manual.

I'll keep that in mind. I looked it up and am trying to fix the issue. So far I've read that fixing registry problems should solve it, so I cleaned the registry with CCleaner and tried it again with no luck.

Anyways, if I can't figure it out soon I'll probably just quit because it really isn't a big deal.

Thanks for all the help though!

Figured it out! Sofos was blocking it. Install is going smoothly so far. Only 5 more disks to go until I get to play what I've heard is the best cod of all time!

Well, personally I think COD4 was the best. MW2, MW3, BO and BO2 is just extending the success of the original.

Either way, still a great game.

I have to agree with you about the new ones. I played 4 through what must have been 100 times and loved it every time. I haven't liked any of the new cods since then. I haven't played 2 before so I don't know how it will be, but I do have a soft spot for the older WW2 games so it should be right up my alley! On disk 4!:-)
