Need help with SBC Yahoo

Alright, i am doing some work for a friend. SHe has two sons, one is 15 and the other is 16(Raging hormones) and so she wants some parental control. She is using SBC yahoo. Sbc does have built in parental controls but the sons have access to another account, so parental controls wouldnt work. IS there some way to disable the other account or something.

She does have another parental control filter, but it conficts with SBC, and she cant get internet when it is enabled.

All she wants to do is check her emails, so it doesnt matter how she gets online, just as long as shes does with parental controls. if you guys could help that woul be great! Thanks in advanced
 
Where is this other access? Her best bet is to control the access, which for her would be the modem. She should be the only person (and dad, of course) to have the password for dialing out. She should not let the browser save the password, that defeats the purpose.

If the kids have a different account they are dialing out through the modem on, then she needs to find out who owns the account and ask them to change the password at the very least.

If she has a home network, then most routers and switches have some proxy control in them, she may be able to password the router so that only she has access to the modem, but then a tech-savvy kid would be able to bypass the router with a hardwire connection to the modem.

I have a single computer which the family uses and a hardware firewall with proxy which limits internet access to myself and my wife. The kids can get on with supervision, through one of the parent accounts, otherwise they can do their homework or play games through their own accounts and there is no internet access whatsoever through those accounts.

Your friend needs to try and keep ahead of her sons in computer technical knowledge if she can, because proofing a computer against illicit use can be difficult, if not impossible, depending on the savvy of the miscreant teens.

There are ways to find out where they've been going, when they've been on and such, it again depends on the technical savvy of the parties involved.

Believe me, I sympathise with your friend greatly, I went through this already with one son, and anticipate trouble with the next one in the future.

Alright thanks for the replies. The other account they go onto is there real moms account an she doesnt want to change the password. She doest want to spend too much extra money on this. She is almost at the point of just unplugging the internet for good. I will probably set a proxy password to connect, and if they do get on, i will get WireTrap so she can monitor there computer usage when she is not looking.

I will also definatly call ther customer support for some more ideas, and more protection for them.

I am not too worried on how savy they are. They are probably about, intermediate when it comes to computers.

Have her set a power on password and shut the computer off when she is done using it, then when you reboot you have to enter the password! I have been through many rounds with my kids and find this to be very effective! I will let them use the computer but I already told them when I check after they are done to see what sites they have been on if there is any porn sites they will never use the computer again and they know I dont play any games so it has worked very well for over a year now!

So at this point ill set a proxy password, install wiretrap, set a power on password and maybe a screensaver one too. I will also set up another user on the computer so they can still do there homework and related. Do you know if it is possible to restrict internet connection only on a certain user? Thanks
 
Just make it easy and set a power on password! When kids want to use the internet she will have to power up the computer and then she can check what they have been doing when they are done and make the same statement I did (if ya surf porn its over you will never be on my computer again) and that is that dont play games! When they are done using it check where they have been and then power it down and there is no way they can get back on! As far as setting up a proxy and all kinds of other things you dont need it! The only thing you do need to do is set up a webtracking program so you can monitor where they have been while online incase they delete the history and cookies!

That one is problematic... proxy verification will work if you can force proxy, Win doesn't really have a native way to restrict users from the internet; things can be done, but again, it's dependant upon the savvy of those involved.

There are third-party apps that can do such, being a cheapskate I didn't even bother with those, which is why I went the way I did... no money on my part, since the software was free and I already had the equipment.

I agree with cell4me... if it's one computer, the power-on password is the best control she can use.
 
no man, she doesn't have to pay to change her password, i have SBC DSL for 2 years, all she needs to do is call tech support (Toll-Free) and she can get help from the tech guys on changing her password. no need for proxy man, you're gonna make it difficult for her. she can get step-by-step to do everything until she is completely satisfied with what she wants, that's what SBC tech support is. tell her to tell those guys, that she would like to reset her password because her sons have gained access to her account, and that she would like help in creating 2 (for their kids if they need 2) separate accounts so that each of their kids access the internet with their child-safe accounts and their emails also.
man, talking about proxy makes everything give everybody a headache, then your gonna have problems with other software and maybe messengers and other stuff.
if you wanna spy on those kids all you need to do is block them from deleting their internet history then the mom can review what they were doing with her password.
 
I tend to agree. I don't know how tech-savy your friend is, but this sounds like it could make it a nightmare for her to even get online. I don't think that turning her computer into the digital equivelant of Fort Knox is the best solution. I'd either contact the person who owns the account and ask them to change the password, or install some sort of monitoring software.

A power on or screensaver password will stop them getting on the Internet, but it will also stop them using the computer at all, which is probably not what you want, particularly if the kids have to type up an assignment, or use the computer in some other way.
 
Yea i wont change the proxy. THe owner of the other account wont change her password, and i have no idea why(dont ask, dont tell). Ill set up another username for the kids, and block there internet acces with zone alarm. Then Her user will have a password to login and have a web monitoring program. THanks for the help you guys.
