. .Intel 865G chipset, Intel® Pentium® 4 processor with 800 MHz front side bus and Hyper-Threading
support or 533 MHz front side bus (depending on processor) and 512K L2 cache or Celeron® processor
with 400 MHz front side bus and 128K L2 cache

The above was seen on the specifications page at http://www.dell.com/downloads/us/products/optix/gx270_spec.pdf

A Socket 478 model board is strictly an Intel board not AMD capable. You would need to replace the board and more likely memory depending the socket type of the AMD model you wanted to run. Upto Socket 939 boards still see DDR 400 memory with the newer AM2 boards using DDR2.

Ya, you wouldn't be able to use an amd processor with that board.

Also, im not entirely sure if you can use the P4 that you linked. I dont have time to look up what fsb your motherboard supports. The P4 has an 800mhz fsb whereas the processor your using appears to be 533mhz. So I cant say for sure whether or not that cpu will work. You have the right socket, just seems like your fsb is too high perhaps for that board, but without looking up the boards specs I couldnt tell you for sure.

You wouldnt need to as PC Eye already looked it up for you...

No it wouldnt. You mobo supports up to 400FSB. The CPU is 800FSB. Its not gonna work. I'd recommend an whole new computer.

My thoughts exactly on an upgraded system at least board there to run a newer faster model cpu. If it does run it would be forced to run at a slower speed meant for one of the older model cpus. That is also common with the older AMD boards where the XP3200+ 2.205ghz model cpu would be seen as the XP2500 on a board limited to a 333mhz fsb there.

(sorry about the fine print seen from posting the information earlier. that couldn't be corrected in an edit afterwards when tried.)

You will be better off planning a custom build there to allow the hardwares you want to see put into it. The first thing to do is figure out the max price range to work with.
