I was running xp pro fine, but I got a new harddrive and it's faster then my old one so I wnted to put xp on that one and use the other for storage. I backed up all my data and started to reinstall xp but I keep getting the following error message.

setup failed to install the product catalogs.

and the setup log says:
Error:
SXS.DLL:Syntax error in manifest or policy file "E:\l386\asms\52\msft\windows\net\rtcdll\rtcdll.man" on line 15

***
Error:

***

Fatal Error:
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

Anyone have any ideas?

At a guess i would say theres a problem with the new drive. Try a replacement, also, the first error message sounds like there is an error on th actaul WinXP disc. You might want to run sme media checks on it to see if it is readable (are there any visible scratches on it).

Other than that i have no idea what is wrong, try a full format and start over again and see what happens.

I used the drive on the last set up and it worked fine for storing data, and the swap file.

The cd does have some scratches, but is readable on my moms laptop, but I'm going to try another disk anyway.

Ive had a similar porblem trying to get my new hard drive to work. Tried installing XP a few times and ket getting problems, XP is weird like that for some reason.

Anyway, what worked for me, and you could try, is wiping out your hard drive with some software. I used wipedrive, and ran it like 3 times, to make sure the hard drive was ultra clean.
