Need Help

I need some help. I have a Gateway 700S running Windows XP Home SP3. Lately it seems that when Windows updates itself I have an issue with the monitor. I recently switched monitors to an old Dell E171FP. I did try to update the driver, but without success. The computer claims it already has an up-to-date driver. Not sure if that is accurate or not.

After the computer updates a window pops up asking me whether or not I want to install updates and shutdown. I click OK, the computer installs all of the updates, then shuts down. When I go to start the computer again, the CPU seems to run fine, however, the monitor goes completely black.

Now for the weird part. After the Dell monitor went black I borrowed my neighbors monitor just to see if it would work on my computer. It worked perfectly. I then hooked up the old Dell again, it didn't work. So, I went out and bought a new monitor. However, just for kicks I hooked up the old Dell one more time, and guess what, it worked perfectly. Something like this happened once before too when I hooked up my tv to the computer. After I did that, the old Dell monitor seemed to work fine when I hooked it up.

Why would this happen? Is it a problem with my CPU or the monitor?

Its possible that you have a broken wire in the monitor cable or one of the pins is bad on the connector.

usually you install the updates and then "restart", not shutdown. Not sure if it matters but I think worth nothing

You can update/shut down or restart. Is your monitor a CRT monitor? Because that could have something to do with it, updating and getting rid of CRT compatibility.

Thanks for all of the quick replies.

The monitor is an LCD and no, the cable is fine. If it weren't, I think I would have had the same issue with my neighbor's monitor when I hooked it up.

I did just update the video driver (NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440). Maybe that will help?

Still very confused.

Scoot: Yes, I used the same cable.

And your neighbors monitor had no issues, correct?

I think I know what's happening. After the update, probably a Graphics
Driver update, the computer defaults the Resolution to that of one not
supported by the specific monitor.

Bodaggit23: Yes, my neighbor's monitor has no problems. Also, so if the resolution isn't supported by my monitor, why is it working now?

I just set the resolution to 1280 x 1024 and the monitor didn't have a problem with that.

Yep, still confused.
