Need help!

hey you guys I have my own little business working on and fixing computers/laptops/ and netbooks and Im pretty good at it but I have ran into a problem that I aint ever crossed before, The guy had a PW on his HD but he cant remember it I told him I could restore his desktop but it would take a little research other wise I would have to replace his HD for a new one. Do you guys know a way to restore a HP desktop manually without CD's?

what do you mean he had a password on his Hard drive? he didnt know his windows password or he had a bios password?
 
You will need a password recovery tool or a program that will delete the password from the registary rarther than find it which may take some brute force.

http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/ is a good free recovery tool

http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/ this on the other hand works slightly differently and edits the password rather than retrieve it.

Try orphcrack first ;) A good gpu will speed things up.

Give orphcrack a go first. Id recommend caine and able but you need access to an account for that.
 
i use the 2nd one he mentioned but that will only help if its in windows, if he has a startup password in bios you will need to reset the bios.
 
If it's a BIOS password then you should be able to reset it by clearing the BIOS through either an internal jumper (hard/impossible with a laptop) or by (re)flashing the BIOS to the latest BIOS version.

If it's an encrypted HDD then.... you're on your own.
