Need Help!!!

My desktop is haing some serious issues. Sometimes, it gets left on for 6 or 7 hours. When that happens, it's like the whole CPU just shots off. When I try to turn it on, the light comes on showing that it's on but the computer doesn't actually boot up. It never actually starts, just the light coming on. Any ideas as to what could be wrong and how it can be fixed? Thanks for your help.

um....it's a gateway intel inside celeron with 512 MB of memory. apart from that, you're going to have to tell me where to find the rest of it.
 
also, when i open it up and try to turn it on to see if anything is firing up, i notice a few things. when pushing the power button, i can see a red light flash on the motherboard real quick and the fan starts but only goes for about a half second, then stops. after that, nothing but the actual power LED at the front stays on.

What OS do you have also ?

I think the pc is going into hibernation mode. So how do you resolve this issue, pull the plug ?

when you state you open it up, is this after you have turned it off, a cold boot, or after leaving it for 6-7 hours ?
 
OS??? It's windows xp. I took it to a computer store and the guy played with it a bit. He changed the power supply and it started to work. Then, when I got it home, pretty much the same stuff was happening, only this time with a little more 'umph'. The fan on the inside will completely spin now and the lights stay on inside as well as out. However, it seems as though the hard drive isn't working because the monitor is in a self test mode the entire time, as if the computer were off, even though everything is lit up. Normally, you turn on the cpu and the monitor will start up as if everything were normal. It's not receiving the signal from the drive saying that the thing is on. I have tried unplugging the whole thing, leaving it for hours, trying it again, and still I get nothing. It simply makes me think that something isn't plugged in correctly and isn't able to give the entire system juice or something.

That is because he said he needed help finding the info and no one has yet to help.

click on Start then Run and type dxdiag... Under system you'll find info about your motherboard ram CPU etc. You'll find graphics card and sound under their respective tabs.
 
you kno... it could be a bad connection between the cord that runs from the monitor to the tower... i think the system itself might be fine but the monitor is just blown out.

ppl have told me that when you are gonna leave ur computer for long periods of time, that you should turn off your monitor to conserve energy within it.

try either getting a new connection cord from the monitor to the tower or buying a new monitor... that's all i can think of
 
Thank you, blue, as I now know how to do that because of you. However, if I could get on the computer and check to find out that information, I wouldn't have a need to be on here. :D There's no way that it's the monitor. I don't know a lot about computers but I'm pretty sure that the monitor is fine.

Are you sure the monitor is pluged in good to the VGA port on the computer, and make sure that the guy that changed the P/S pluged back in all of the power leads-motherboard-cd drives-hard drives and some video cards had a power lead
 
What if I were to say this? What if I said the CPU sounds like and looks like it's working correctly. Is it possible that the monitor isn't working the way it should be? I ask this because I plugged the monitor into my laptop to see if the monitor would display it correctly and it didn't. It just said:

"Monitor Self Test
Your monitor is working correctly
Ceck computer power and monitor cable"

I know my laptop works because that's what I'm typing on now as we speak and the monitor still doesn't display the proper screen. ANy ideas? Thanks again.
 
i still think it's the monitor... u should try using a different one... if that's doesn't work... then notify us and we'll think of a different solution
