Hi,
Wasn't sure where to post this but i need help. Im having problems booting my pc, It takes for ever and always freezes where the desktop is showing but no icons or toolbars. I was told it was because i had an old slow harddrive but im not convinced in there anyways to fix other than formatting my harddrive/buying a new one.
Many Thanks
Chris
P.s I forgot to metion all this started after i installed mcfee which was also installed on my brothers pc and it works fine

Well you might be having alot of programs starting up with Windows which can seriously make your computer boot up slower.

Firstly Mcafee is a resource hog, it will make most low end PC's run slower and is only happy running on an ultra fast one. I sugest you download and installe AVG AntiVirus FREE Edition

Next you need to sort out what prgrams are starting on startup, click START - RUN - type "msconfig" - hit ENTER - click STARTUP - untick anythig that you do not need to start when windows does.

Next you will need to scan for spyware and adware, download and install/run Spybot Searh & Destroy aswell as AdAware SE Personal Edition. Do a full system scan with each and clear out what it finds.

Finally, download and run HijackThis, run it, and post the log file up here, our resident security expert, Buzz, will msot prob take a look at it and tell you of any nasties there are hiding in your system.

complete the above and get back to us

Thank you for your replys but it does not even boot it freezes with the desktop shopwing but no icons or toolbars

ah right, sorry misunderstood you a bit there. stil my ideas should be doen when you get back up and running.

Onto the problem in hand then... right, i take it this is the wonderous windows XP (i hope), if it is, when you hear the first beep form the BIOS saying all is ok, start tapping F8 a lot, it should then end up in a screen saying a lot of options, one of which should be SAFE MODE, select it and boot into safemode (well, try to) if it works then do what i said above.... if it doesnt, read on...

boot up with the winXP cd in your CD drive and go into the recovery console. From there you can follow instructions on screen.

sorry, i have never used the recovery console, i only know of what it can do, anyone else with experience care to comment on this....?? Oh and this is really one of those times whee having a floppy drive pays off, can you not steal one form an old PC or anythign, what about your brothers PC, lol
