need info on RAM

ok so i got a AMD semptron 2400+ and it runs at 1.66 ghz its got 256 of ram (kingston value RAM) if u put in 1 gig of ram how mu would it up my computer's perfromance . how many mhz would it go up :confused:

Adding more ram does not effect the speed of the processor. What it effects is the overall performance of your system. The CPU will still run at its default frequency but having more ram would mean that games and other applications will have more memory to work with. As a result, the computer should perform better. From personal experience aim at a minimum of 512MB. The ideal situation for most users is 1GB.

jan is right, increasing the memory will not make your processor run any faster. However it would perform alot better, if you playing some newer games and apps like adobe, macromedia, ect, then you will notice a huge difference in performance. I went from 512mb to 1gb, and farcry went soo much better. By the way, are you running XP?
 
you mean like overclokin it but i dont know how to do dat n whats the FSB can i do it myself yhis is my first computer build i can easily acces the inside what do i need to do
 
1. its been what 10 min? waiting a bit wont kill you
2. its in the guide, read it.
3. go into the bios and raise the FSB until everything dies or it hits 2GHz
 
sorry bout that cromewell but UM.. so i go in the BIOS n raise the FSB can this damage my machine in any way? p.. what are n how do i get to the BIOS im sorry i dont kno much on the basics but its my first build so ya.. plezhelp guys n thanks for the help so far.
 
usually you press delete or one of the function keys (F1, F2, etc) to get into the BIOS, then you are looking for a setting for FSB just raise it slowly. Yes it can damage things if you get over zealous, but usually you are safe if you don't raise voltages. If there are no options in your BIOS you may have to use jumpers to change the settings, you'll have to look in the manual for how to do that.
You could try clockgen (www.cpuid.com/clockgen) but it doesn't always work.
 
UM.. thanx could i raise it from 1.66 Ghz to like 2.01 Ghz and not damage my machine i didnt really get how to get in the BIOS could tou explain that again
 
yah I didn't explain that very well, my mind was moving faster than my fingers...

right when you turn your PC on there will be a screen (either the oem logo or it will have some messages) you press delete or one of the F keys to enter the BIOS, I don't know what it will be for your system but it will say somewhere on that first screen.
 
is your computer a custom built, or did you get it at a store (Dell, HP, Compaq, eMachines, ect)? If you custom made it, then you go into the BIOS when your comp starts up (usually by pressing F2, F11, DEL) and go to CPU configuration, i cant say for sure what to do there, cause all motherboards are different, but there is a spot to change the speed.

Although, if yours is a brand name, then you cant overclock it, they do something to the BIOS so you cant, that way there not responsible if you mess it up. Only way to get around this is to buy a new mobo, and you would probably need a new case also.
 
ya mine is custom built but a have a cheap ecs motherboard and i went in the bios is it where it says frequency do i raise that up its at 166 now it can go to 240 and my cpu runs at a steady 1.66 Ghz i would like to get it to 2.oo Ghz and it keeeps a stady temp at 43/42 celcius
 
just do the math 166 * x = 1.66GHz so y * x = 2.00GHz (treat x as a constant), the temperature might not be steady at 42ish. Just raise it a bit by bit don't jump right to 2GHz and test the system for stability every so often when raising the FSB
