Need LAN security

Hi - My PC is conected to a Linksys Router, model WRT54G via ethernet cable. The Linksys is connected to a cable modem from comcast.

I have read that my network activity is NOT safe from the other computers (one wireless, one not) on the home LAN. I don't have the password for the router nor the username but have access to the router. There is no server here at the house. I was having some problems connecting to the network and Linksys gave me these settings which fixed the problem, but I want to be sure I'm shielded from nosy roommates.

How can I secure my network activity against snooping?

I am running a firewall,
Zone Alarm 6.1.744.001
and I do not have the ability to upgrade Windows.
I'm running Windows 2000 Pro, SP2

Thanks!

if you are worried about security, you should probably access your router by typing in the ip address in the explorer bar and turn off wireless access. this basically will stop people mooching free internet from you.

the admin + password will be in the manual that came with the router.

Then log in and change settings.

default is admin and admin on linksys routers.

the LAN itself is safe. however if you have wireless without encryption then it becomes unsafe. easy to fix, turn it off like someone said or enable WAP or WAP2. DO NOT PUT WEP UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. wep is easly cracked and is not safe. To enable it, log into your router with the admin admin user name and password and go to wireless and then the sub catagory of security

If you want to cover your computer put up the windows firewall. Better than many think. Most of all "hackers" can't break that wall. It's weak if you now what you're doing ;)

If you want to cover your network you have to encrypt the wireless signals. WPA or WPA2 is enough. You can also bind your MAC-addresses to the router so just know MAC-addresses can get in.
