Need MB advice for computer build

Hi all.

I have a Gateway 831GM chassis with the standard power supply and peripherals that it came with. It does not have a motherboard or a processor.

I have the original 250GB 7200rpm HD as well.

I'd like to build this pc up. I'd like to build a somewhat speedy machine for light graphics building and web development. I have the following questions:

1. Can I use the HD it came with? There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it. Just curious if it will be too slow.

2. Can someone please recommend a MB / processor combo that will fit this chassis and is price conscious with good performance? OR (maybe I'm being too vague here) tell me some characteristics I should be looking for?

3. I also have 2 sticks of ram that I believe went with the old pc. They are PC2 5400 1 GB sticks. Should I try to reuse these or buy new?

Thanks for your help!

I prefer Intel.

What about this?
-Intel G620 lga1155 Processor @ $69.99
-Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2H Board @ $69.99
-G.SKILL NS 2GB DDR3 Ram (2) @ $12.99 each

Total $165 at newegg.

Will that combo work with my hard drive and power supply?

Unfortunately, no. The motherboard would not work in that case. Its form factor is BTX, and only OEM boards are that size. Here's a cheap case that would work:

The hard drive would work fine. I would take out the PSU right away, though. Most OEM PSUs are terrible quality and won't last. You could easily replace is with a corsair CX430. Its a great low end PSU that is $50 and lower. I got one during a sale for $18 including rebate to go into a low end machine.

Right now its $35 with rebate, but I've gotten 2 for 2 on rebates from corsair. They're pretty good at honoring them.

Another problem is windows. Unless you can get a legit copy for free or plan to use linux, you'll have to buy another copy with a new motherboard.

And it'd be worth it to get 4Gb of RAM. Its dirt cheap.

So that would up the total by $77, bringing it to $242.

That Gigabyte MB is Micro ATX form factor.
