Need memory help please :)

hi my parents have a relatively old Compaq desktop. i chatted online with HP and they told me the most memory they can upgrade to is 1 gig of 184 pin DDR memory. i go to electronic retailer websites and this type of memory isnt very common. anyways i was wondering since there are two slots do i have to buy 2 chips of 512 megs or can i just buy one chip of 1 gig memory and leave the other slot empty? It's alot more economical to buy a 1 gig chip than two 512 meg chips :)

When they say the max it can hold is 1 gb, it usually means total memory so you can only go up to 2 x 512mb sticks. if you give us the model of the computer we can verify that for you.
 
unfortunately I don't have the computer model number with me, but a week ago i did talk with HP and they said the max memory is 1 gig. I understand that it means 1 gig total, but I was just wondering if that means I have to buy two 512MB chips or can I buy a single 1 gig chip and leave the second slot empty (being that there are two memory slots)

im wondering this because a 512 MB chip is pretty much the same price as a 1 gig chip, so that would almost double the cost if I have to buy two 512 chips.
