I have Norton right now, and it just seems to be giving me problems. Anyone know of another good anti-virus program that is free? And how does that program compare to Norton, better or worse...?
Thanks.
Norton gives many people problems due to having a hampering effect and a list of other bugs at times. McAFee and Symantec also get low grades compared to other system utilities as well as antivirus programs. For an excellent free antivirus program Grisoft provides the AVG 7.1 Free edition that even updates itself about every other day when you first start up. You can download directly from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 On occasion AVG can detect spybots even in strange emails that arrive.
You will notice that AVG is listed as the first of three downloads there along with Avast. Avast does lack certain features like boot sector and email scanning. It was great for spotting questionable web sites however where upon reaching the ??? site "somethiing" immediately tried to get on your system. In that sense it acted more like a firewall part of what the latest Windows Defender beta 2 does upon installing a fresh download where a security prompt will appear immediately.
The actual best advice anyone can give on antivirus, anti-spyware-adware-malware type utilities is to recommend being familiar and using more then just one or two. Getting to know which ones are better for which types takes a knowledge of several utilities since no single program will stop everything.
