Hi, I'm a student and I'm obviously broke, ;), but I need a laptop for basic stuff. I'm going for 512MB RAM, 40Gb, CD/DVD RW.

How much would this be around? I don't even care for graphics or processor, or whatever. Oh yea, also it needs to be able to connect to wireless internet. :)

I would like to spend less than 800 USD, but I'm not sure if that is possible with that setup, but i would be willing to compramise some features to lower price.

Thanks!

I'm sure you can find just about anything that can fulfill your needs. Whether it's HP, Acer, Asus, Dell, Toshiba, even IBM has the R series in that ball park.

Ok, I found two laptops that I'm interested in, both from Acer with almost excact specs and price, but I'm not sure which is better, in terms of proccessing and performance:

AND

Acer Aspire 3610 series AS3613WLCi Intel Celeron M 1.5GHz 15.4" Wide XGA 512MB 60GB DVD/CD-RW Combo Intel GMA900 NoteBook - Retail ($699)

The first one has XP Pro, while the second one has Home edition, and the first one has screen of only 15, and the second has 15.4 screen size. BUt the first is 11 dollars cheaper. So which one is a better deal? Which one would you get?

If you are a student i would recommend xp pro, but i'm also in college for a degree in IT, and i use home edition. I have xp pro on my home computer, and i like it. It has better networking and stuff like that that you wouldnt really need at home. But if you are using it at home and not at school on a network, you should be fine with xp home. Just remember when you get your computer to run windows update, and if you also have office, i would run microsoft update. I would also suggest purchasing microsoft office student and teacher 2003. It has excel, word, powerpoint, and outlook 2003 in it among other features. good luck!

I believe the 1400 model is already 2 years old and a P-4. I'd suggest looking at something newer with a Pentium M processor. As for pics, Acer's been using a similar design for quite some time now.

i would recommend XP Pro on laptops for security reasons (you can lock down XP pro better than you can XP home, plus it supports EFS Encryption (weak, but better than nothing if your laptop gets stolen)
also, for screen size, I pay attention more to screen resolution than screen size.

And try to find something w/ good battery life, you might end up regretting it later if you don't.
