Need new laptop-Will it improve Wifi performance?

Current laptop is a 5 year old HP 2000 Notebook. Want to buy a new laptop. Will a new laptop give better Wifi performance? Thank You.
 
Depends, although the new laptop will likely come with a 802.11ac wifi radio/card so it should perform better if you had a 802.11ac router.

If you're still using a 802.11g router from 10 years ago it will still suck.

Yeah, as @beers said AC router + laptop with AC is gonna be better. I know in mine it came with AC chip but it was a 1x1 so I swapped it with an Intel 2x2 and get nice speed/performance on the go.
 
Usually if you log into your isp account or look at the bill they will charge you for a specific speed package. It's a good number to keep in mind as you could be overpaying or not getting the quoted speed, such as if you subscribed to a 200 mbit package. Your router only has 100 mbit interfaces so you can never achieve more than 93-94 mbit with the equipment you have.

Who is your ISP?

You'll be on some type of package that indicates your speed..(or what your supposed to be getting)

Im in Canada and the ISP that I'm with has several packages.. (for example. 50M.. this means, in theory you'd be paying for 50M download speed.. when you run speedtest you ideally should see the number that your paying for) In my case.. lol..I'm on a 250M and where I live in this little village I happen to be beside a huge tower and on speedtest I actually read 300-333M .. but thats probably very uncommon..just lucky where I happen to be)

Also, that router is ancient.. if you want better speed..like gigabit ethernet..your 100% going to need a router that has current tech. Wifi N is not only old...but its slow and that particular router isn't even fastest N so its really out of date..
 
Just checked because we switched isp's about 4 months ago and i have the 60 mgs package. All speed tests since then have been right at 80. Thanks for the info on my router. I want to say it's at least 4 years old but I only have the laptop in the dining room and a Roku in the bedroom. Roku works fine but the laptop is just slow at times.
 
If you pay for 60Mbps internet, that will be fine, just note that if you ever want to subscribe to a faster internet plan, you'll need a new wireless router. Next time you buy one, make sure it's an 802.11ac wireless router.

For your original question, most likely it will perform better, but it depends if your old laptop didn't have 5GHz WiFi while your new one does. If it does have it, you need to make sure you're connecting to that (usually called Netgear-5G for instance).

Thanks for the info. I do have a much better idea on my situation. It sounds like I should also update my router when I get the new laptop.

Definitely, it'll benefit you now...and ready you for more devices...or a higher package from your ISP down the road ..its a win-win !! :)

Make sure your new laptop has AC wifi.. most new ones from 2016--forward will..but just keep that in the back of your head for specs when the time comes to pick one!!
