Need no graphics card. Please help!

As of now, i have an intel hd graphics card. It make work for league of legends but i want to get more into games like Skyrim and mw3. But being a total noob, I don't understand which one to buy and why to buy it over another one. So if anyone has any recommendations or advice it would be greatly appreciated.
PS. I'm really just hoping for a card that would allow me to play on or low or medium settings very smoothly.
 
Well an AMD Radeon 6850 is a good choice, if you don't have a preference between nVidia or AMD. This will let you play most games on high, but it depends on the rest of your specs
 
Things we need to know first-

Current CPU, motherboard, power supply, and budget for this upgrade.

And BTW, MW3 sucks wait until black ops 2 comes out.
