Need OS help... ASAP

I put together a old pc and had some OS problems. When i try to install windows xp it goes to the blue screen of death. When i tried windows professional 200 it took forever. When tried a few different linux's it froze. I've been trying for 2 weeks and need some help. Thank you.
 
sounds to me like a hardware problem. if you have the ability to swap out parts, try systematically replacing pieces and see if you can isolate the problem.
