Need some advice (help) on HP laptop diag...

Hello, I am currently having a problem for someone but I have ran into a little trouble at the moment. They said that they rec dropped it and it would not boot. I received it not knowing what to expect but It did not seem bad. I boot and it passed Bios but then I've got the random blinking cursor in the corner. No CD in, HD recognized but im getting Smos bad, but how could that be from dropping, I checked its connected with no app problems. I don't know. It will not let me restore but it wants to read a win install disk?? im thinking its a bad HD. or corrupted os partition.
 
Chances are if it has been dropped the hard drive has damage now. Remove the hard drive from the system and try booting up. If it says cmos is bad then you will have to reset settings back to default.
 
Thanks thats what I figured. I dont see how smos could be bad from a drop. I know spindle
could be broken but any way to recover docs/data?
