I have a Pentium 4 (HP260M) desktop which is my second computer in my house and has always been very reliable, albeit a bit slow (Specifically it has 2.5GB RAM, 160 HD, XP & I think 2.43GHZ Pentium 4). I just use it for basic functions such as downloading, browsing the web via Cable Broadband connection & burning CD/DVDs. I don't do any gaming or graphics work. It's in my Den.
For my main computer, I use my Toshiba Tecra notebook which is core 2 duo, 2.5 GB RAM, 1.83 GHZ, 100 GB HD & also XP) & I'm very happy with the speed, particularly wireless browsing in my apartment (I use it in my bedroom).
Again I do basic stuff only.
My question to you guys is, for what I'm using the desktop for, is it worth it to replace it with either an AMD 64 X2 computer, a single dual core computer or a core 2 computer, or will the difference be so minor in terms of speed from my Pentium 4 for what I use this for, it won't be worth replacing?
