Need Some Advice On My First Build!

Alright so im looking to build up a new system and need to help/advice. Ive been doing quite a bit of reading and im not 100% sure and what i want or even what i really need. I think id like to go with intel(i7) but not 100% set on that, also i cant for the life of me decide to go with ATI or Nvidia. hoping i can pull of a i7, x58 board, and 6 gigs of ram.

Here is what im looking at right now. Suggestion or a whole recommended build would be awesome.

Zalman Z7 Gaming Case
Intel® Core™ i7 950 Processor 4x 3.06GHz (or AMD?)
6 GB [2 GB X3] DDR3-1333 (what brand?)
ATI Radeon HD 5830 - 1GB (Nvidia?)
MSI X58 PRO-E
700 watt PSU (how many watts would i actually need? what brands?)
WD 1TB
24X Dual Format/Double Layer DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW Drive
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy SE (or just the on-board? good enough?)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (can i use the vista basic that came with my dell 530?)


Suggestion, Thoughts?

Everything looks good. RAM: Go for Corsair, Mushkin or G.Skill.

Powersupply: What brand? Get Corsair, Seasonic, XFX etc, something in the 500-600w range.

The 5830 is okay but the the GTX 460 1Gb from nvidia outperforms it by a fair amount, and costs about the same.

A newer soundcard, maybe an X-Fi Titanium?

You don't want a "basic" O/S - they are severely limited. you also want a 64-bit copy of windows 7.

I would also recommend some DDR3-1600mhz memory over 1333mhz
 
Video card - GTX 460 1GB if you want Nvidia

PSU - best to get 750W if you want to run dual video card in future

So i did some more research and got some pointers and opinions from you guys (thanks). So here is what ive come up with.

Just a question about the mobo, not sure if this is the one for me. I really am not sure what one is good. I like the idea of USB 3 and the SATA 6.Gb/s so i can use the faster HDD.

Is the PSU good?

ohh and the total shipped from newegg is $1,191.40 (with Win 7 home prem)

I recommend for 6850.
I think its on your budget, since you mentioning a 5830...

2 HD would be nice, western digital...
A system drive that need performance to 500GB caviar black.
A backup/video/music/document/etc that need reability goes to 1TB caviar blue (or green for less power consumption)

For the last, I think an i7 950 and 6GB of ram are very "overkill" to a 5830 or even 460.
I sugest using a HD5870 or GTX 480 if their on your budget.

I would not get the 6850 as it's not a 5850 replacement as you would think. it replaces the 5750, AMD changed the naming scheme.

The GTX 460 1Gb is the best bang for buck card right now.
 
I wasn't recommending the 6850. For NVIDIA I'd go with the 1GB 460 like linkin said. The next step up would be the HD6870 at about $40 more or the GTX470 at about $60 more.
 
Nothing over the top with regards to gaming. CSS, CODMW, and Flight sim x. alot of photo editing with cs5 and lr5. so i think the 460 will do.

i have a 27" sceptre screen 1920 x 1080p. Is the 460 with only 768mb enough or should i really get the 1gb?
 
Get the 1GB, look at some reviews. It's worth the price difference.

Here's an example of the difference with a graphically demanding app at high resolution.

Thanks for the chart.

What do you guys think of upgrading to a GTX 465. Seems like there are quite a bit better than the 460 and not much more $.
Mostly going to be playing Flight Sim X, will my setup be good enough?
 
Corsair PSU it is. 650 watt should be enough?

Anyone one else recommend any other changes?

And what about Firewire? Does the Mobo support i or have it built in?
