i went to upgrade my graphics card. my current setup was an amd 6000+ athlonx2, 7900GS video card, gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G, 2 sata hard drives, 1 IDE hard drive, 1 IDE optical drive, 4 1gb sticks of ram(4bg total). i went out and bought a pny geforce GTS 450 from best buy. the in store price was 199 and with a newegg price match i paid $99. for $99 i didnt think it was too bad of a deal. anyways my system will NOT post with the new video card, i cannot understand why, my motherboard is 3-4 years old but it has a PCI-e slot, it should work. i should also mention that i upgraded my power supply. i was running an antec truepower II 430W. i upgraded to a thermaltake 600W, originally i thought my supply was NOT adaquate for the new card it was a good guess but i was wrong. the video card box calls for a 450W or better, i think that a 600W supply would be enough. thermaltake is as good as a brand as antec, so it shouldnt be creating any issues.

any ideas?

Thermaltake is not as good as Antec, except for their Toughpower units. Anything else is rebranded OEM stuff.

The PSU you have, it wouldn't happen to be a Litepower 600w would it? I've just ordered another psu to replace it (it's not dead it's just not very good)

That said it should be fine with a GTS 450. Check all connections. But first, remove the 450, go into the BIOS and set primary video to PCI-E (should be in chipset options or advanced options) and hit F10 to save and exit.

Then shut down and put the 450 back in, check all the connections (make sure the 450 has a PCI-E 6 pin connector, otherwise it won't boot)

If that doesn't work the card is probably a dud. When it powers on does the fan spin fast and loud? If it does it is most likely dead.

the power supply is not a lightpower 600, it is a TR2 600w, and it has a large 120MM fan on the underside. here is its http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...cm_re=thermaltake_600w-_-17-153-114-_-Product
anyways, i thought maybe my 430 truepower wasnt enough juice. its also probably around 4-5 years old, although it still isnt a dead PSU. im starting to think my motherboard doesnt like it becuase the board is probably 4 years old and isnt pcie 2.0, but pcie 1.1, im not sure about that but its a good guess.

as far as thermaltake being rebranded OEM stuff, i didnt know that. most dells and like systems have really terrible PSU's. i have seen them as low as 250W in a modern computer, which is pathetic. the reason why i bought the thermaltake is becuase it was what they had in the store that newegg also carries, and 60 bucks wasnt too bad. there in store price was 89 bucks. MOST of what best buy carries is way, way over priced.

antec is an excellent brand, i dont dispute that, but i didnt think that thermaltake was bad either.

i tested the video card in my wife's computer and it worked fine. nothing wrong with the card. she has a gigabyte board with a quad core amd. by the way, her supply is only 380W. its a gigabyte board but a newer model.

im guessing the problem lies with my mainboard since i know that the card works in another machine, the powersupply is adaqaute. i think i might take back the thermaltake supply since i really dont need a bigger supply and i could use the money towards a different board

have you tried clearing the cmos and re installing the card? i had one card swap go wrong when the motherboard thought it was bad, however it was not.

not really sure how to do that on this board. i havent cleared the cmos. would that wipe out that bios as well? i have the latest bios on this board as well, i would rather not mess it up.

how about removing the cmos battery and re-installing the battery?

i think that would be the way to do as you describe

ok, i looked at my board and found the jumper. i shorted it out with the power off. i also removed the cmos battery. none of this helped, computer would still refuse to post. i had to reinstall the old video card so i could use it again. i have given up on the board. i think im going to order a new am2/am2+/am3 board from newegg. im thinking another gigabyte, since the board i have right now has lasted since 2006 im quite happy with it. im on a budget so im thinking about this board:
