Need suggestions on a new computer

OK, Ive come to the conclusion that if I want the power and speed to do what I want, Im gonna need a new computer. Currently Im running a 32 bit system with an Athlon 2600 XP proc. Why I need more speed is because I do a lot of video rendering, image rendering etc. Things that can take hours if not days to do. Within reason, What kind of MB and processor should I get? Im assuming my old RAM, sound card, video card etc will x-fer.
What I have right now:
MB: Shuttle Spacewalker AK32
Athlon XP 2600
512 ram
GeForce 5500
SB Audigy
200gb HD
160gb HD
My sound and video card do what I want, I just need more SPEED!!
Thanx

did a little googeling, that motherboard should be Socket A, if you really want a powerful video rendering processor then you're gonna have to get a new motherboard with socket 939 (if you want to go AMD) or LGA755(if you want to go intel)

Definatley dont transfer your ram get high quality ram probably 2GB and above for what your going to be doing to it!!

Wait for Conroe Extreme Edition 1333Mhz FSB. DDR3 1333Mhz as well. SUPER POWERFUL AND FAST.
Conroe at 2.67 GHz versus an Athlon FX-60 overclocked to 2.8 GHz (where the FX-62 will be at), and it´s no surprise the Intel rig beats the AMD system hands down in most of the gaming tests. 20 to 30 per cent lead and up to 40 in F.E.A.R. really speak for themselves.

"It’s also worth noting that the 2.66GHz E6700 we previewed here is simply a high end mainstream part, it is not an Extreme Edition flavor of Conroe. At 2.8 or 3.0GHz, a Conroe EE would offer even stronger performance than what we’ve seen here. "

Yeh, Im in no hurry. What kind $$ are talking about here? You mentioned not x-ferring my ram. Whats the difference? Cant I use the 512 I have and add another 512 or so? Or am I so behind in the power curve now that theres different kinds of RAM now?

not compatible

Most new motherboards will use DDR2. AMD and Intel. This is the way things are going right now. In the "not so distant" future it is possible that motherboards that support DDR3 will be coming out but that will be a little while yet. I don't think they are done with DDR2 just yet. OCZ is set to release ram at 1100Mhz(DDR2 or course) Others are releasing 1066Mhz DDR2. So your DDR1 is not useful unless you are going to be running an old motherboard with an old processor. Basically DDR1 is not compatible with the newest technology. Sorry.

Dont see how the high quality is going to make an earth shattering difference -- the point is to avoid the HDD :) ... after that it's essentially CPU bound

Yes because that's such an affordable option ;)

Just Wait a Little Bit....

Ok Praetor, your right. I got a little bit carried away. Conroe for the average consumer might be out this summer. The ones that run 1066Mhz FSB. Hopefully these will be a reasonable price. The Extreme Editions 1333Mhz FSB enthusiast ones probably won't come out till late in the year (and will cost you dearly no doubt). So just hang in there a little longer till June or July if all goes well.

i do some media stuff in that area too, and i know it can take some power to do it smoothly (or smoothER rather). progs like 3dsmax, adobe after effects, photoshop cs2, etc. benefet alot from the amount/quality of the ram. like said before, 2gb of RAM would be good to have. a nice gfx card is important for 3d work if you do any of that, but otherwise a low or mid card will suffice. I'd recommend an AMD dual core processor (doesnt everyone nowadays?) and a nice mobo to go with it. there are so many mobos out there that you'll probably just get alot of people saying that there's is the best, so it would be good to check out some reviews (newegg.com has good prices and reviews for hardware). it all depends on how much you want to spend. the amd x2 3800+ will be a significant difference in performance for you, but if you have the cash you may want to fork out for a 4400+. You'll definitely want to replace your RAM, unless you have good ram you want to add onto. RAM isn't just RAM, its performance varies alot and old RAM doesnt have the lower latency timings of the more recent RAM. I'd say that for video rendering and image work, memory is the second most (just behind the processor) important part of the system.
