I want to build my own computer. My budget is like $500 i know its not much but that is the budget. I usually use the computer to watch movies mostly HD ( it would be connected to the TV. I would like to go quad core as i would like to keep this computer for years to come.

What my question is that would it be easier to get started off with a bare bone unit or just do everything individually ?

Second how much wattage should be sufficient enough for what i would need. I know that selecting the power is important but is shooting for 1000w over kill ?

I'm not as experienced as most of the people in here to answer the first part but I can answer the 2nd part...yes 1000w is an overkill. 650w should be the most for what you are doing, especially with a $500 budget.

i was trying to find a requirement to watch HD movies but i see nothing. I was told today that even going dual core is fine is that true ?

What would be the benefit over dual core vs quad core

That's true, a dual core could watch HD movies.
2048Megabytes's list is quite good. However, I would suggest few changes.

PSU: I don't really think you need a 500W, also Thermaltake Purepower W0100RU 500W only provide 70% efficiency
I suggest Antec Neo Power 430

Video card: Strongly recommend ATI 4000 series as they support sound through HDMI
Just pick a ATI HD 4670 512MB

OS: Pay extra $10 for Vista Premium

BTW, for your question about PSU, Here is an interesting article I read a while ago.

Quad-Core processors are expensive. They multi-task (run more programs) better than Dual-Core processors do. A Dual-Core Processor is going to run you about $50 to $60. Spend the extra $23 and get a Phenom Tri-Core processor. Your computer won't get outdated as fast as a Dual-Core Processor will be.

As long as the heatsink doesn't obstruct air flow and it fits in your case and fits your motherboard case I say it's fine.

What is the model of the Quad-Core processor you bought? (Sorry about the 20 questions, just curious.)

I just built my first pc and everything went fine until yesterday. I was using the computer turned off my monitor because windows were going through some updates. I came in this morning to see it turned off. When i turned it on everything came on except my keyboard and mouse and my monitor was not turning on. When i look at everything its running including the graphics card. but its not sending a signal to the monitor.

I replaced it with the one that came with the motherboard and it works fine. My current specs are

AMD Phenom 9550 quad-core 2.20 GHZ
Asus M3n78 pro
4GB DDR2
Nvidia Geforce 9800GTX
500 HD
i think my power supply is about 650W i`m not sure because the label is on the other side. I recently took the 450W that came with my case and replaced it my old one because of the power to the graphics card

You've got a good set of hardware you're running there.

Right when your computer starts up push the F8 key. See if you can boot into Safe Mode. If you can, use System Restore to restore your computer to a state before the update. I am guessing the updates messed up your system.

If you need any directions on how to use Safe Mode just ask.

Wont even go to the monitor. When i turn it on says no signal to monitor HDMI or VGA. i tried them both, tried different monitors.

Try resetting your BIOS. If you look at the manual that came with your motherboard it should show where the pins are and show you which one's to jumper (connect together). Hopefully your mobo came with a jumper but if not you can use a flat head screwdriver touching both. Make sure that you unplug your power supply and hit the power button on the front of your case (this discharges the capacitors on your mobo), then jumper the BIOS reset pins (as described above) for about 15 seconds. Plug your computer back up and see if you can boot and let us know what happens.

If you don't want to mess with moving wires around on your motherboard you can also just pull the CMOS battery out and let it sit for about an hour. That should reset your BIOS.

slyzz, may i ask where you got your parts from? local hardware store or you bought it online? ebay/amazon?
