need to decide which parts...

well, i have a choice between another 7800gt and a 74 gb raptor with 16mb buffer...
or a new power supply and two 74gb raptor's in RAID 0.
basically i have about $450 online spending money.. and i want one of the above.
i'd save the money but my uncle said he wants me to get something instead, for my graduation. lol

so what is it?
a second 7800gt and a 74gb raptor
or a new power supply and 2x74gb raptors?
i think i might need the psu if i get SLI though... lol
maybe ill buy a psu with my own money and get the 7800gt and the raptor.. lol

thanks for the input...
see my current psu is a 580watt... but its got a single 12V rail at like 24A i believe... plus its a cheap powmax demon or somethin... lol definitely needs a replacement.
i guess i'll get the 78gt and the raptor, and if it can't supply the power then i'll see if my dad will let me use my own money to buy a new power supply.
im thinkin 600-700watt psu.
my friend can get parts for cheap though i'll ask him

I would also say the gt and wd, but what I would be concerened about is the stability of the psu. You wouldn't want to be getting unstable powr getting feed to your pc.

So I would do a threefer.
the gt
wd and
psu

For the price of a 78GT, why don't you get a 7900GT? Or a X1800XT
he likes nvidia... so i don't think he would a get a x1800xt... regardless of the 512MB dedicated video memory...

i would get the 74GB RAPTOR and a another 7800GT except that you would need a new pSU...

but if u got a x1800xt u wouldn't need a new pSU & u would have 512MB dedicated video memory

Then why not the 7900GT?
Also, if he got the X1800XT, he would probably need a new PSU anyways. The X1800XT takes more power than a 7800GT. And with the dual hard drives, i think he will need one.

because the x1800xt is 512MB dedicated video memory while the 7900GT has only 256MB... it is a no-brainer

yes one x1800xt takes more power than one 7800GT, but one x1800xt doesn't take as much power as 2 7800GTs...
as far as i understand he isn't upgrading to a 7800GT he is getting anohter one to run in SLI...
so having one x1800xt will not take up as much power as 2 7800GTs... and it will still be 512MB video memory...

Then why not get the 512MB 7300.. since it is cheaper

The only thing i would say about getting an x1800XT or 7900GT is that you would need to sell your current card, where as if you just got another 7800GT, you dont have to worry about losing money by trying to sell the one yuo have now.

he allready has a 7800gt so he needs to sli and sli 7800gts are alot faster than one 7900gt or gtx and would even outperform a x1800xt

Not really, SLI isn't as good as everyone says it is. Also, you wouldn't have to sell the 7800GT. You could stick it into another computer and make that a gaming computer. Also, getting another 7800GT is about the same price as a 7900GT.
@Encore
The 512mb of video memory doesn't really help until you're at high resolutions with AA and AF. Also, the video memory isn't everything. Go ahead and get a 6200 Turbocache with 512mb of memory ;)

No it won't. Two 7800GT is not the same as 512MB of video memory.
To answer your statement about the power consumption, the X1800XT takes 110W while the 7800GT SLI takes 129W. He'll still probably need a new PSU...
And I'm not that dumb. I know he's not "upgrading" to a 7800GT.

Well most likely he doesnt have the need for two gaming computers. I would look for a 7800GT on ebay, since they are generally pretty cheap.

There are a lot of choices you can get:
You could sell your 7800GT and get a 7900GTX/X1900XT(XTX)
But between those two, I would get the 7800GT, Rapter, and a PSU.

right now im looking at the 7900gtx 512mb :)
but, going with this card means i can't get a 74gb raptor... oh well! i dont need it anyways!
maybe i'll talk him into it :) haha

if u get a 7900GTX you prolly will have to get a new PSU... if u get a x1800xtx, you would have 512MB video memory & not need a new PSU & play games on max graphics very well... just instead of 150FPS, u might get 120:eek:

the only problem is u would have to overcome ur nvidia avatar to do this...

well i have a SLI motherboard, so i don't really want an x1800... the 512mb is definitely worth it, but the 7900gtx definitely looks like it's what i want.
i mean 650mhz core! my 7800gt won't even hit 500! and 1.6ghz MEMORY! WOW! SPEED!
also, its probably overclockable afterward. plus, i can sell my 7800gt then :)

you still are gona need a new PSU... what i am basically asking is if it worht it to you to pay like $100 more (cus of a new PSU) to get 150FPS instead of 100FPS and to spend more cus its Nvidia?

well, it wouldnt be worth it if it only has 256mb of memory. thats the reason i didn't want a 7900gt. i mean, i play quake 4 with ultra quality and the speed and size of the memory will matter a lot if i want better fps in that game. plus COD2 and F.E.A.R.. oh man this things gonna be a beast i ordered it already lol 7900gtx 512mb 650mhz core 1.6ghz memory... hopefully i can get it to 700mhz and 1.7 or 1.8ghz memory... that would be nice.
we'll see what coolbits thinks i should clock it at i guess :)
with 512mb the thing will not only play games that use the memory better, but it'll last me a lot longer as well.
what do you guys think i'll be able to clock it at?
