Need to download motherboard drivers

Hello,

I built a new computer and have also added the old harddrive as a secondary harddrive and its loaded with a ton of stuff.

I cannot figure out how to download the motherboard drivers on the old harddrive. I cannot boot up the old harddrive, but can access it from "my computer" in the start menu after booting up from the new harddrive, which contains all the correct motherboard drivers.

I'd really appreciate if someone could tell me how download the motherboard drivers onto the old harddrive.

Also, should the old motherboard drivers be removed before downloading the current motherboard drivers?

Thanks,

Adam

You can't put a hard drive from an old machine into a new machine and boot into windows. The hardware is different so it won't boot up. You will have to do a fresh install of windows.

Thanks John. Is it OK to install the same windows (XP Pro) thats on the new harddrive? ie, both harddrives containing the same operating system.

Will I lose all the data on the old harddrive with a fresh windows install?

You can use the same version of windows on the new drive as long as its the retail version not the OEM. OEM installs are tied to the motherboard that it was installed on and it can't be transferred in most cases. Just don't hookup your old drive until after you install windows on the new drive or you'll take a chance on creating a mess for yourself to clean up.

Thanks, but I'm a bit confused.

I want to get the old harddrive (which is actually a new harddrive, but a clone of the old harddrive) operating system working again. It is set up as a second harddrive. It has a lot of stuff and will be used for storing files.

Can I reload the operating system on the old drive without losing all the software and files on it?

I didn't realize all programs would have to be reinstalled. The old harddrive has a ton of stuff on it and I thought by cloning it I could access everything just like I could on the old computer. I didn't realize the drivers would not be compatible with the new motherboard.

Thanks for your time John.

Adam

If its to be used for storage, why are you worried about reinstalling the OS on it? All programs would have to be reinstalled on the new hard drive anyway. You can always do a repair install by booting to the install cd and follow the prompts to do the repair. here is a guide.
