Need to replace my NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS

My NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS card just died on me (tech said it overheated) and I need a new PCI-express card to replace it. My thought were to simply replace the card with an identical unit, but the fact is I don't think I really need it. I inherited the card with the PC when I bought it on Craigslist 10 months ago, and the previous owner was big on games - I'm not. My biggest demand is via the video editing I do, as well as a great deal of photographic work, the most demanding of which are the large mosaic and panoramic pictures that I produce. Unless there's some nifty way of using a particular graphic card to put Hulu on a normal TV screen, I don't think I need anything out of the ordinary. Gaming? About the only thing I ever play are adventure style things like Myst and those produced by the Adventure company, which aren't very demanding at all on hardware.

Any thoughts? I haven't built a new PC in a few years, so I'm a bit out of touch with the latest cards.

Thanks in advance

Tim

Okay, I stayed up till midnight last night going through a pile of cards on Newegg, and couldn't make up my mind, nor am I really comfortable with my scanty knowledge on current trends or technology. All I really know is that I want a trouble free card that will not give issues with Windows 7 64, is compatible with my other hardware, will give me all the grunt I need to work with high end video editing and photo image processing, and as a secondary consideration, will allow me to stream net content via HDMI. There were some nice discounts available on certain units, and I came up with two lists, one around the $50 - $60 range, and another for slightly higher priced cards in the $70 - $100 range.

I was leaning towards the XFX card, but a number of people made comments about how hot it runs, and as I've just had one meltdown I don't need another.

If people would lend a view to help me make the best bang for buck choice I'd appreciate it - importantly, I don't want to pick a card that won't work well with my system.

Thanks for reading.......Tim

of those the GTS450 and HD6770 are the best bet. I dont know how they compare to each other, but they will power just about any game out there at a decent FPS.

@Daisymtc. I'd actually come down to the same decision - the GTS 450 models mentioned were also of interest, but the saphires come with standard HDMI ports, whereas the EVGA models have mini HDMI ports, which would require an additional outlay.

Question though - I'm given to understand that the 5670 would give me a performance level similar to the 8800 GTS card that just burnt out. Even though these cards aren't specifically for video/photo work, unlike dedicated graphic cards, would purchasing the more expensive Saphire render significantly better/faster image processing over my old card, or the 5670?

Thanks..........Tim
