Need to speed up my Laptop

Hey Guys, posting here after ages. I have Dell XPS L502x laptop, quick config, i7 2630qm, 4gb, GT 540m, 720p.
I have not used it much for the past one year. Somehow I don't understand why it is running slow. Browsers, applications take time to open and switch, so this is basic thing I need to speed up.
I don't really want to format my PC. Have been away from computer world since long, couldn't find the solution myself .

Do some general cleanup on it.

If that don't help, I would possibly look at a failing hard drive.

There might be some adware/junk that needs to be removed. In that case, you can follow john's guide here: http://www.computerforum.com/threads/please-read-before-requesting-malware-removal-help.224967/

Also, make sure that your harddrive isn't at capacity. You could also look at getting an additional 4GB of RAM.

if u have a hard drive have you tried defragging
