Need to transfer data from Laptop Harddrive

Hi - here's the skinny - Laptop boots, will not run programs, virus suspected. Do they sell those external hard drive cases for laptop sized hard drives? Or is there another way to transfer the data from my laptop to my desktop?
 
there's a 3.5 to 2.5 inch hard drive adaptor you can get if it's ide, if it's sata I dunno but I think they're exactly the same. Anyways, you could get one of those and plug it into a desktop that way, or run the 2.5 drive to the adaptor to the regular external case
 
You could also get a USB male to male cable and run the data from one computer to another. Could take a while, and I don't know if you would need a program.
