Need to wipe out hard drive......New Girlfriend lol

Hi Guys (and Gals),

I'm hoping you can help me.

I need to wipe all files from my laptop.

Ive just got a new girlfriend who doesnt approve of my large collection of porn haha so ive agreed to get rid of it.

There's nothing illegal etc so i just want it clearing to start fresh.

I dont have anything on the computer that i mind losing really so what would be the best from of action.

PS its fairly new and is running Vista as it OS.

Someone at work has said if i just run my computer from disk and clean install vista this will delete all my unwated porn including pics and vids downloaded, and pulled off CD's from mates computers.

Is this true?

i just dont want my Girlfriend to come across anything when going on my computer.

If this will work i will do this???????

if you REALLY REALLY want to get rid of stuff you don't want people to see like porn in your case, then I suggest you shred your hard drive. Yes, SHRED, by that I mean you use a shredding program that doesn't delete the index file telling windows where the data is, but it overwrites the data with random code to make sure that it is completely deleted.

If you just want to reformat the hard drive, then back up all the data that you DO want, then pop the XP or Vista installation CD into the drive and follow the prompts. There should be an option for formatting your drives, use that to wipe the drive clean.

So you format your hard drive to get rid of data you don't want people to see. THAT is definitely true. It would delete EVERYTHING legal or illegal. ;) How would the computer know if a file is legal or not, lol!!!

So for my case of just not wanting my girlfriend to find it a simple clean installation of windows would do it?
 
so can i just confirm that a clean install of Windows Vista will be enough to wipe it all???

If you dont have spyware or a virus on your computer and you know where the porn files are and she just wants it off just delete it!
 
theres alot of it on the laptop and its all over the place, it will take ages if i sit there and go through it all.

Theres other rubish as well..................theres nothing on the laptop that i want to keep.

so would a fresh re-install of windows delete all porn on the computer?????:confused:

I will just ahead with a clean install of windows then if that will work.

theres nothing worth backing up really so it should be the fastest and best way.

Unless anyone has any other thoughts?

Hidden folders?????

Whats the problem with them??

Will they be kept on the hard drive after the re-installation??

My girlfriend is good with computers (for a woman haha) so she will easily find hidden folders etc.

Will reinstall definatley get rid of all my porn.....even in hidden folders etc??

put your vista install disk in, reformat the partition you want to install on (and any others you want wiped out) and then install as usual. she wont be able to find ANYTHING.
 
you can just simply delete all your unwanted file and than clean the HD with disk clean up, think that will help you to remove all your unwanted files.
 
Download eraser. It doesn't cost anything and it will overwrite files using the Guttman method (35 passes), then download ccleaner to erase the logs and other crap. Once you're done with that, defrag your HDD and there will be no trace of any porn left. If you do a clean install of your OS you'll probably lose several drivers or catch a virus trying to update your system if you're not careful.
Another option is to hide your user profile and start another one that doesn't show all the porn.

Next time, put all your porn into one folder, with subfolders according to category, name, or whatever. And M$'s Private Folder needs a password to get into it. Plus, it's free. You can also back it up to DVD or CD or whatever.
