hi all...
im a bit of a noob when it comes to fixing things out side of windows...

The computer is a w6f asus laptop no upgrades except for bit more ram...

we put windows 7 on it.. it failed half way through the install so we decided not to worry about installing windows 7 and continued to play with vista, i installed microsoft word... i then restarted and it dissappeared i tried 3 more times before i wanted to install xp again...

now when i enter a genuine xp cd (no scratches) it says bootmgr missing..
i tried to boot from usb.. put all files from cd onto it. and then went through and said to only boot from the usb drive... same thing said that bootmgr missing..

so then i copied windows xp files onto the hard drive itself to try boot from it as if it was external hard drive trying to eliminate having a bad cd-dvd drive
same thing happened bootmgr missing...

i dont kno what else to do?

check your cmos setup...
then change it to ATA controller...
then try to reinstall it..
maybe it can help you...

Here's How:

Enter Windows XP Recovery Console. The Recovery Console is an advanced diagnostic mode of Windows XP with special tools that will allow you to restore the boot.ini file.
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/rconsole.htm

When you reach the command prompt (detailed in Step 6 in the link above), type the following command and then press Enter.
bootcfg /rebuild

The bootcfg utility will scan your hard drives for any Windows XP installations and then display the results. Follow the remaining steps to add your Windows XP installation to the boot.ini file.

The first prompt asks Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All).

Type Y in response to this question and press Enter.

The next prompt asks you to Enter Load Identifier:.

This is the name of the operating system. For example, type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition and press Enter.

The final prompt asks you to Enter OS Load options:.

Type /Fastdetect here and press Enter.

Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.

Assuming that a missing or corrupt boot.ini file was your only issue, Windows XP should now start normally.

i would try to use the windows recovery but i cant get anything to boot... therefore i cant use the cd to get into windows recovery....

also the hdd has been partitioned... i cant get it to go back to one... although i do kno that the hdd works fine as a portable hdd as i tested it...

also the last OS to be on the computer is windows vista... but it doesnt matter now as it has been formatted!

im also getting a ntldr error message now
