Hi guys!

This is the first time I'm building my own (gaming) Computer. I need you guys to help me. Let me show you what idea's I got so far.

CPU - Intel Core i7 860 Processor
Motherboard - Asus MAXIMUS III FORMULA Motherboard
Video - BFG GeForce GTX 285
Ram - DDR3, not sure what type?
CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-U12P SE2 120mm CPU Cooler
Hard Drive - 700GB, not sure what type?
Display - 22 inch monitor LCD
PSU - 750W Thermaltake, 140 mm fan
Case - NZXT Zero 2 Craft Series Full Tower Case
Windows 7 Professional

This should give you an idea for what kind of gaming computer I'm making, its around $1500. Please if you think anything won't work, or something else will work better. And if you got any Tips for me, please reply!

Thanks. :D

Id change the HD to a 500gb .12 seagate drive for single platter. I find them faster and more reliable. (Personal Opinion Here)
Id look at the GTX 285 vs the 5850 as they are roughly the same price but ATI is DX11 and newer tech then the 285 if you don't plan to SLI/Crossfire later that is :P

If you however plan to go SLI later it might pay to wait a minute before buying the GPU. Fermi is suppose to be coming out in a month or so last I heard which will be DX11 and suppose to be insanely better.

*edit*
Fermi is out March 25-26 - http://www.nvidia.com/object/paxeast.html

Stole this from OC http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/600710-nvidia-gtx-285-vs-sapphire-ati.html

Top end card: 512 cores, 384-bit, High clocks ------ performance between gtx295 and 5970 ---------- $599
Second Card: 448 cores, 320-bit, Moderate clocks ---- performance between 5870 and gtx295 ---------- $399
Third card: 256 cores, 256-bit, High clocks ------- performance around 5850 ------ $249

This is just a guess of course. XFX had one of the cards up on their site briefly for the bottom price apparently which makes the the $249 price tag LOOK accurate.

I snagged this guess from another user http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/274647-33-guestimate-fermi-cost

The GTX 470 is set to releae for $349 USD, I'm not sure about the GTX 480, i think it's $449.

By the way these are nvidia's official prices.

Wish new cards were not so damn expensive at release:cool:

If those prices are correct then its going to be around £300 for the 480 over here according to a currency converter at todays exchange rate for a raugh estimate.

but if they are around £300 it should push the prices of the 5870 down because theyre currently £289 and ATI wont want everyone going to nvidia :P

i might look into fermi this time depending on the final pricing....again damn UK tax will add another £50-70 probably

You sticking with your 5770 when the fermi comes out Linkin?

Get 3x 2GB sticks of Corsair denominator RAM i7 like ram in 3s for tripple channel read.

Coolermaster v8 cooler can clock an i7 2.66 ghz - 4ghz stable.

I would get a dx 11 card from ATi the Nvidia ones are not out till june

PSU - Corsair 750watt 40amps

Sound card Creative X-Fi Titanium PCI-E - its the only sound chip or card that can run EAX 3d sound under windows Vista or Win 7. It also takes care of the sound processing normally done on the cpu. You can live without it but my mate prefairs the 10yr old sound cardI gave him over his top of the range motherboard sound chip.

If you want the new 3D vision Hologram 3d you will need a 120hz screen or you will only see 30fps. Most 120hz screens are not 120HZ they use a program to smppth it out you need a native 120hz.

i7 860 is socket 1156 which only supports dual channel.

coolermaster v8 is highly over rated, the noctua posted would be better at a better price, or a megahalems or venomous x would be better.

Like posted earlier, nvidia DX11 cards (Fermi) is meant to be out next week some time, not June, and they should, if nvidia tell the truth and haven't gimped the results, perform better than the ATi counterparts, however, because it is nvidia, will costa hell of alot more too.

If he is only using a single card, even if it is a 5000 or gtx400 series card, a 750W PSU will be massive overkill. If later down the line multi-gpu system is in order, then it would be justified, but with a single card a 550W will suffice.

A sound card deffiantely isn't needed, but if you have the room and a bit extra in the buget after you have built your system, go for it, but the money would be better spent on upgrading another component which will give better performance than putting a sound card in.

Finally, 3D Vision is a joke to say the least, it is a gimmick that until perfected and made affordable, won't catch on. Hell, I think even if I had the money I wouldn't buy into it

yes of course, i only have 1280x1024 monitor so a 5850 or GTX 470 or whatever makes no sense to me.
